Song suggestions for my students
I have a database of about 400 or so songs I use with my students (all adults of various ages and abilities, all acoustic) and I'm always on the lookout for new or new/old material. My specialty is finger-style but strummed tunes are fine too.
For the last couple of years my biggest dilemma has been finding good tunes for my female students, for some reason. I've been working on introducing them to people like Sara Jarosz, Eva Cassidy, Sara Watkins, Aoife O'Donovan, and many others. As these are mostly intermediate level recreational players my challenge is to give them something that goes beyond four or five chords but is not totally overwhelming, has a solid melody (this is accompaniment style primarily) and good lyrics. Suggestions of specific songs and/or artists are really appreciated! Although I regularly listen to a couple very good local radio stations - WUMB in Boston and WMVY on Martha's Vineyard - I know there are a lot of very good musicians out there that I'm not hearing, or perhaps have forgotten about. Thanks! |

I just bought this tab tonight, it was three dollars and change I think, Dust In The Wind (finger style). I haven't played in standard for a while and this is a great way for me to get back into it. It might work for you. No chords though, all finger style.

Hi Gene,
From reading your post, I thought of Wil Maring (female,) www.wilmaring.com) She has a lot of original songs, plays with Robert Bowlin one of my very favorite guitarists and might bring some new material and musical musings to your students. Best, Fred

You should check out Ani DiFranco, who by now has a big catalog with a variety of styles.

For the female player singers especially, here's a few more:
Anna Nalick - great singer/songwriter with some hits in her past that are fairly easy to play fingerstyle or strumming. A few that we do are Breathe 2 AM, Wreck Of The Day and Catalyst. Lady Gaga - two songs from A Star Is Born that are great ballads with super-easy to play chord progressions are I'll Never Love Again and Always Remember Us This Way. |

Thanks y'all, keep 'em coming. I have used the standards like "Landslide" and "Dust in the Wind" for decades and they are good tunes for the beginner/intermediate players. I guess I'm primarily searching for less well-known stuff at this point. Ani DeFranco, Cheryl Wheeler, Alison Krauss also show up in my database, great writers all.

Do you subscribe to a music streaming service? They can be very helpful… Here are 4 or 5 which are fun to learn/play… Pete Huttlinger's "Darcy's Guitar" is a fun little fingerstyle piece of intermediate difficulty. Catchy and employs a Travis-style alternating bass (played with the thumb) with a lyrical melody played by the 'rest' of the digits. Muriel Anderson's version of Mr. Bojangles. A little more advanced, but it can sure be pared back to a couple very playable variations on the opening theme verse. Shebig and Shemoor (take your pick of players). Ed Gerhard's arrangement of 'The Water is Wide' |

I am am a beginner in finger picking, and most everything else relating to the guitar. I heard this tune, Presbyterian Guitar, by John Hartford, and was able to get it down. A very elemental but satisfying composition for someone with few to no skills.

Thanks for posting it. I listened to both a recording of it by John Hartford, and the video you posted. Easily accomplished in either a Thumb-n-2 finger-styler or Thumb-n-three finger player. |
