Default truss rod mechanics

A number of years ago I tried my hand at building an electric guitar. My two-way truss rod fit into a channel in the neck, and this was covered by the fret board. At that time, I had thought that the rod worked by pressing against the ends of groove and using these points of contact. I was always worried I had done something wrong, because I didn't have much wood in these positions and thought it was possible to blow out these areas.

Started thinking about this again, and now I think the truss rod actually presses against the bottom of the groove and against the underside of the fret board. So in theory, if one cranked the rod enough, it would be possible to pop the fret board. Can someone confirm or refute my thinking. I think I'm bored.

I can confirm that. The lateral forces can, on occasion, split the neck, particularly depending upon the geometry involved and where the nut is situated, if at the head-end of the neck.

Also possible to blow out the back of the neck, seen that many a time

Some of the extremes you can adjust a truss rod through

Neutral position

1/2 turn positive

1/2 turn negative
