Here's one I posted on FB when John went into the hospital. I put it up on YouTube and reposted it when he passed.

The virtual open mic on Facebook I've been participating in had a challenge this past week for John Prine songs. I probably the skirted the edge of tastelessness with this one, Please Don't Bury Me, but it is one of his songs, and always been a favorite of mine.

Anyway, here's the audio for the [quickly made] video I posted in the group (not on YT). I cajoled another open mic participant (Jaunetta Cooper) to toss a harmony part my way. She'd have played guitar if we had time but I did post that video before he passed. I've committed to squaring this little timing faux pas with JP if I'm lucky enough to get the chance...

If John Prine songs haven't been part of the soundtrack of your life, you've missed a lot of joy.

This was a couple years back, with the trio I was in at the time. That's me singing lead.

I learned this song in 1990 or so, when I first became acquainted with John's music. I never stopped singing it.

Here is a version of Clay Pigeons I did when John first got sick. I didn't do his exact style of travis picking, but similar.

Hope you all enjoy.

This is an adaptation of Johns "Paradise" that I put together during a grass roots movement to stop a relatively small (40 potential well pads) Natural Gas development that was inconsequential in terms of actually adding to the Gas supply.

But significant in terms of potential habitat destruction in a primary calving and fawning ground for elk and deer , and right on the steep slopes above the watershed headwaters of the Hoback River in Sublette county North West Wyoming.
Fortunately from unlikely coalition of Sportsmen, Environmentalists, Ranchers et.al. funding was raised to buy out the leases and stop it.

I thought about it for a while as I didn't want to jump on a bandwagon, but fair's fair, let's recognise JPs contribution, and here are three from me:

This was one of JP's less serious ditties. And it's more than a bit dated. First of all, the smile that was then illegal nearly everywhere is now decriminalized almost everywhere and legal in lots of places. And the reference to the judge in the last verse is something you need a real specific kind of memory and/or connection to Chicago to still get, but it it was a pretty obvious item when he wrote the song.

And finally, I have no business singing anything compared to most of the folks who post here regularly, and in this thread thus far. But I figure I might be one of the few people who thinks less of his singing voice than John did and his opinion of his singing gives me some limited comfort about mine. At least until his throat cancer surgery, which he later said he thought had improved his voice by dropping it into a lower register. Well, I can't sing a lick, but I'm not hoping for any similar path to improvement - I'm happy enough just belching along as I am. It's all fun.

-Ray
