Default Got a Neumann TLM 102 recently and....

...I love it. Okay, I'm new to large condenser microphones, but I've got to say the TLM 102 is remarkable. I can scream into the thing and it just takes in the entire depth of the sound. I'm using it mainly for vocals, spoken word, and acoustic guitar. It's a small microphone, but I like that aspect because I can transport or set it up anywhere. I'm using it with an Apogee Duet 2. Seems to work a charm. Just wanted to post my very layman review.

I got one a few weeks ago for recording my mandolin. I think it has just as "detailed" a sound as the small-diaphragm Rode microphones I was using before the little Neumann while also sounding a bit warmer.

I used to have an older ADK A-51 and it was slower and more colored sounding by comparison. Too picky regarding placement, as well. It kind of turned me off to LDC's for a while but the TLM-102 is a keeper.

The only downside is its extended bass response (the Rodes were rolled off below 200Hz) picks up any ambient hum or rumble in the room.

Hey Brent,

There aren't too many condenser mics that I don't roll some of the bottom off somewhere. Even my Neumann U 89i gets tucked in a bit when recording solo acoustic guitar.

Hey, Ty! How did AES go for you? I had a blast.

I can get away with being pretty crude with it since I'm recording a solo mandolin. No real bass content to speak of anyway. So I just plop a bit old high-pass filter on it in Reaper right before I do the render. Everything under 150Hz magically disappears!

Bob, I had two days of fun. Saw lots of mics and preamps and studio technology. Some new diffusors and absorbers. Here are some....

Yeah, I went to the DTV panel and the mastering discussion. I also went down to Soundtracks Studio in lower Manhattan across from the Flatiron Building and enjoyed seeing how they handle Audio Post for several shows.

Part of my charge from work was to investigate the Solid State Logic editors and controllers on two levels - the Nucleus DAW controller for our smaller rooms and the 948 console/controller for my room. I came away pretty impressed with both, frankly. Typical SSL solid technology. for some reason, I was also really impressed with the Sanken dual diaphragm condensers this time around. A fun show, even if smaller than before. I expected to shoot a lot more pics, but didn't.
