Default belated 2020 gear year in review, what did you buy/sell/trade?

Hi guys,

I was looking through my gear spreadsheet, receipts and emails so I thought it would be fun to tell each other about your 2020 gear year in review, as well as a look forward.

For me in 2020 was:

Bought:
- National Triolian 12 fret
- Gibson J-185 Original
- 4 Diamond Bottleneck slides
- LR Baggs Anthems for the J-45 and J-185
- Climate Case cover
- TCE Polytune Clip
- Manhasset Fourscore sheet music stand
- New guitar workbench and some associated tools and parts
- Consumables like strings and fingerpicks

Sold:
- nothing

Traded:
- nothing

Obviously I went completely bonkers in 2020 so 2021 will be a no buy/sell/trade year with the exception of a big bulk string purchase from Strings and Beyond.

So how about you? What did your 2020 gear year look like? Anything coming in 2021?

P.S. Thought some pics might be nice:

Just the one really ... and it was a big one.
I did leave my Huss & Dalton at the store on consignment when I picked up the Gibson. Superb guitar but the 1 3/4" nut is just that tiny bit too much for me .. but if it doesn't sell I'll bring it back home.

I bought a Yamaha practice amp, a Ditto looper and a bunch of stuff like stands, amp cords, gig bags and of course strings.

Didn't sell or trade anything. Gave away some strings I wasn't going to use.

Let's see, I've been on an electric kick this year.....

1971 Fender Telecaster
2012 Fender Telecaster AV 52
2015 Eastman Jazz Elite AR 16
2020 D 'Angelico Premier SS (Actually won this in one of those monthly Truefire drawings)

Amplifiers.....

1965 Fender Vibro Champ
2020 Blackstar IDCore BEAM

I built both a F51 Champ and a F511 Vibrolux.

On the acoustic side of things I did sell a Collings D1 Traditional, and picked up an Eastman MD505 Mandolin.

So Yeah, gas has not abated......

I completely rotated my herd early in the pandemic into a lineup that I thought would keep me happy for a long time - Taylor 717e Grand Pacific Builder’s Edition, Gibson J-45 and a Martin Custom Shop OM-18. Then I made the “mistake” of playing my first Collings...which completely change my understand of how a truly great guitar sounded and played. Next thing you know I was securely on the boutique bandwagon, selling/trading all three of those guitars and heading to the used market to pick up these two beauties. Couldn’t be happier.

2017 Collings D1A Traditional and 2018 Bourgeois Generation D:

I picked up a lightly used OM1A JL w vintage case and JL 1 11/16” nut/JL neck profile. A superb instrument and a perfect fit for me in every way.

Sold nada, but that’s fixing to change, or so the plan goes.

I have a question for OP J-Doug on the 4 Diamond Bottleneck slides - what’d you get, and how are they working out? Purchased direct, how’d that go?

I think, based on many comments here on agf, I’m about to take the Diamond plunge on something lead crystal based for the pinky and maybe ring too. Not to use on the JL though, likely a tricone reso and Eastman oval hole acoustic archtop will be the victims, along w electrics. Any comments on closed or open ended models highly appreciated (hope thread does not derail). Thanks.

Hi Mark, OP here:

The four rightmost slides are the Diamond Bottlenecks I bought in 2020. An Original, a Mike Dowling Signature, another Original and a Ruby Prism Ultimate. They are working out really great with the Ultimate being my favorite. Smooth and toneful and the quality of workmanship is outstanding. They look like jewels!

Ian is amazing to work with. No issues ordering online. I did have my specs all sorted out when I ordered since I had another bottleneck that I liked for them to match. In the end I did have Ian resize the Originals since I ordered them too long and he's been very helpful with that. He's making another Ultimate for me right now in Ruby Red. Can't wait to get it.

Sorry no experience with the closed end slides but I've heard from some that they can get sweaty.

I'm sure Ian would be happy to answer any questions you have before ordering. He drops in here once every couple of months so I would recommended emailing him directly via his website for a more timely response.

Two Taylor solidbody and a Sterling Cutlass CT50 electrics and a new Line6 amp and controller.

January 2021 was all about acoustic amplification but that has to wait until next year's review

Bought a Tom Sands M in Swiss moon spruce and bog oak.

Wife tells me I am done.
