Same for me. My first guitar was a Stella "finger-bleeder". My Stella was bad enough to make a kid want to quit playing guitar. I then bought a Harmony H-1260 from a small shop in downtown Charleston SC in 1966 for ~$85. I traded the Harmony for a new Martin D-28 in 1969 in shop in Memphis. I am pretty sure I gave $425 for the D-28 (the case was additional money). The D-28 is long gone and I wish I still had the Harmony.
