Oh no, the end of the world (strings and things)

I was putting on a set of GHS True Medium Signature Bronze on my Guild D-120, along with installing the D'Addario soundhole gizmo tonight.

I was in a hurry and I cut the 2nd string at slightly under the 2nd post instead of the 3rd post. Luckily I had a set of extra strings that I'm using as singles. Unfortunately though the 2nd string replacement is a stainless steel 14, but what the hey, I'll live

I've done that one other time. Not bad for a 50+ year span,

I've done that. I never used to do it but I recently decided that I should cut the string before bringing it to tension instead of after. I am re-evaluating my new methodology!

I hate a mismatched set of strings. I'd be looking at another string change in the near future. Of coarse I've done it myself once or so.

Unless the guitar has a slotted headstock there's absolutely no need to 'pre-cut' new strings.

I always trim first.

Even then I still don't cut strings until they're wrapped and tensioned. I've never seen an advantage to pre-cutting.

Ah, the basic flaw in the ‘Taylor’ method!

Pre-cutting is completely unnecessary and pointless. If you don’t cut until you’ve tuned ‘em up, that can’t happen. Just makes complete sense to wait until you know for sure that you’re good to go before ‘burning your boats’ by cutting the string.

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

I like the pre-cut method myself. It makes the job easier and you don't have all that excess string winding around ready to snap at you.

If you don't precut your strings you should think about wearing safety glasses with those strings flapping around.

Some strings tell you specifically NOT to pre-cut (Sunbeams come to mind)
