Default The new Wolfram Martin Simpson Signature Slide is now available!

I posted a thread a while back in the Custom Shop about a tungsten carbide slide I designed and made. Well, I've been busy working with Martin Simpson for the last seven months now, and...

I'm delighted to announce that the new Wolfram Martin Simpson Signature Slide is now available, exclusively through Wolfram Slides! See also Martin's announcement on his website here.

This is a completely new slide - an evolution of the one Martin has been using for some years now - and every aspect has been improved and refined to achieve my and Martin's ideal of the ultimate guitar slide. It's made from a new nickel tungsten carbide metal matrix composite, a material that is almost as hard as diamond and weighs nearly twice as much as steel. At over 190 grams, this is one of the heaviest in the world, yet is compact, agile and comfortable. The playing surface is lovingly hand-polished to a beautiful mirror finish, and the incredible hardness of the nickel tungsten carbide means it will retain that perfect finish without scratching or dulling for many, many years.

This means that when playing, the slide saps virtually no energy from the string through friction or vibration, producing a rich, bold tone coherent across all the strings, with a controllable, precise attack and unsurpassed volume and sustain. The flawless finish enables the slide to glide effortlessly along the strings with virtually no resistance or noise, producing clean vibrato and great clarity - particularly on the wound strings. The outer surface of the slide is straight, while the interior is tapered, balancing the slide and throwing the weight towards the fingertip where it is most needed. This also ensures a very comfortable fit on the finger.

Being individually hand crafted from a material that is incredibly difficult and expensive to work with, these slides do carry a premium price, but the professional slide guitarists I've shown them to (including Michael Messer) concur that they are worth every penny. Each one takes around six weeks to make, including specialist sintering and molding, and several hours of expert grinding and polishing by hand here in England. I think we've put a great package together - each slide comes with an exclusive 16-page illustrated booklet co-written by Martin and me, providing information on the slide, its construction and Martin's slide technique, a certificate of authenticity individually signed by Martin, a velvet pouch and a British-made Selvyt TM microfiber cleaning cloth.

I'm fanatical about quality: every slide that leaves the factory is perfect, and engineered to last a lifetime.

Please check out our website - there's lots more information and photos, and you can purchase direct from us - we ship worldwide (and already have several satisfied customers on AGF from the UK and USA. I'm very happy to answer any questions - either here on the forum or email/facebook/tweet us through our website.

I have one of these, the Martin Simpson model, and I happily paid for it. These slides are sublime and unsurpassed. I can say this after having owned and used the tungsten carbide slides Martin Simpson used exclusively for a number of years that were made by John Lynch. These new slides are a massive step up and are worth every penny (or cent) if you are serious about your slide playing.

Cheers,

Ian

What is the smallest size that you make? My issue with most slides that I love the tone of, is that they are too big for my pinky. Being a woman with skinny fingers I need some sort of insert or inner sleeve. But for this price it would seem that I could have one custom made.

Best,
Jayne

Hi Jayne,

Thanks for looking. The Martin Simpson Signature Slide comes in one size, with a straight outer diameter 25.4mm (approximately 1"). The interior is tapered, from 22.8mm diameter at one end to 16.9mm at the fingertip end - this ensures a great, comfortable fit on most pinky fingers. Do you have a particular size slide that you find most comfortable?

We can also make completely bespoke slides - see our Custom Shop for more information - but we do have to charge more for these as we have to custom make the sintering mold and set up our tooling differently too. If you're interested in going down this route, then drop me an email and I'd be delighted to talk.

David

Cool, but why isn't this posted in the "AGF Marketplace"?

Thanks, David, for your reply. I do not play that much slide, but have to admit that listening to Martin makes me want to play more! I will let you know if I decide to explore it as an option.

Best,
Jayne
