Leather Picks
In the most recent issue of Acoustic Guitar there was a small blurb in the New Gear section about SkinTone leather guitar pics.
I got to thinking... I've strayed from picks over the years because I'm almost entirely fingerstyle these days, I seem to have a genetic inability to hold onto them without them rotating , and because of the jarring difference in sound when I switch from fingers to the pick. Sometimes I'd just like to do some pick strumming with the softer fingerstyle style sound. (no fingernails, here.) I tried felt picks once. It worked sort of OK, but the pick would rapidly start to shred itself and generate little fuzzy offspring. So, does anyone have any advice, suggestions, reviews to offer on SkinTone picks or any other leather picks in general. Thanks. |

I've not used a leather pick.
I have used rubber flat picks on electric bass. I'd expect leather to have even less rigidity, and such picks work for "plonk" and but not so well for crisp strumming or faster flatpicking. Might work in a hybrid picking approach when you're using fingers and a flat pick together. I guess they'd naturally give a little more of a muted bass pluck sound you get with light palm muting in such a use.

I would find some cheap, stiff leather thingy somewhere and cut my own...?

Hmm not a bad idea; could cut up some old shoes from a thrift store or something.

I wonder if these would work best for Ukelele. I believe they sometimes use felt picks.
Never heard of it though. sm |

I think Gilmour used a leather pick on his nylon when he played Is there anybody out there? in Floyd's The Wall gigs.

Maybe I'll just order one up and see what shakes.
I've risked more for less. |

It creates an effect that you may or may not like. You can't have too many picks anyway.

Yeah, you might as well try one. I have no interest in using leather picks myself, but I'm always interested in reading the response of anyone who tries something this offbeat.

You know, I wonder what the tonal difference would be with beef jerky. And would Teriyaki have deeper base than, say, Western BBQ flavor, or Hot n' Spicy?"

There's only one way to find out....But it won't be me who tries it. I'll let someone else have the honor. Looking forward to that review. At least there's the added advantage that a jerky-pick can be eaten if it doesn't work out. I'm placing my order for the SkinTone pick. I hope it tastes good. |

Several years ago I bought a handmade leather pick at a Uke festival, more to support the vendor than a need (I was new to uke at the time). Didn't like how it felt playing the nylon strings at all (it is quite thick compared to a regular guitar pick). Never even thought of trying it on a guitar, will have to see if I can find it now.
