Default P-90 Guitar Suggestions

I have 3 Strats and a killer ESP Les Paul-ish guitar but have nothing with P-90s. I want something to do that alt-country vibe for me. I am thinking of the Gibson Les Paul Faded DC in either TV Yellow or the red mahogany.

Have you any experience with these guys?

I like the DC looks, but I have a problem with the location the neck pup on a 24 fret model

for that reason, I'd recommend one of several Hamers, depending on your budget: a Goldtop Studio, a Special, or a Monaco Elite. These all come stock with Seymour Duncan P90s - a Hot and a Custom I think - and the workmandship is as good, and often better, than Gibsons. They are a great value used.

alt country you say?

I'm pretty sure they make a epi wildkat with bigsby in a really cool trans black finish. that screams alt country. Also, i had a reverend for a long time that I regret selling, it had the coolest vibe of ANY electric guitar I've ever owned. Now a days I'm playing my SG classic with p90's and I love it,
Peace,
Rafe

Thumbs up p-90

Hi,

I have a Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker. It's lightweight and pretty toneful through my VOX modling combo. The single P-90 in the bridge position is versatile, if a bit noisy. I'm likely to replace it with a Duncan custom humbucker under the P-90 cover.

Godin has a P-90 guitar called an LG P90. They are a great value. 22 frets, and the pu's are Seymour Duncans!

Yamaha had a Weddington Special that was LP JR-ish, and it had DiMarzio P-90's, I believe. Would be a good used value.

Curly,

I would like nothing more than to buy a Hamer Special Korina Jr. but they list out at $3000. I am a little offended by that considering that some of the nice maple cap Hamers are cheaper. That is really pushing it.

I agree that the Hamers are far better built than the Gibby but for the price difference....I have to wonder.

BTW, the Faded LP DC is a 22 fret guitar. What is the pickup placement issue on the 24 fret guitars?

You would not want to overlook a PRS Soapbar II.

Good call. I heard good stuff about the asian PRS stuff. I had a CU22 10top for a while. Great guitar.

I just got a super sweet Rivera Chubster 40 and have been getting some insane tones from it. I want to throw some P-90s through it.

sorry ... the korinas are cool, but I meant the earlier Specials - same shape as the Studios, but flat, not arched. They should go for around $400 - $500 on ebay used. Great players for what you want. I'm partial to the TV yellow, but all their finishes are top notch.

used Goldtops should go for around $650 - $800 for a dot neck, and up to $1000 for a Custom. another great player with "bad to the bone" tone.
here's a pic of my '94 Goldtop:
Hamer Goldtop

a 24 fret note puts the neck p'up closer to the bridge, therefore it's brighter, plus it's not under the harmonic node

I LOVE my Custom Shop Historic '61 Les Paul/SG Special. The P90's are amazing!

I am not sure if it has to do with them being screwed into the body of the guitar or what but...the sound of the wood seems to come across really well with a P-90.
