I've got a Schecter C1 classic I'll sell you for $400. It's mint. I only played it maybe a half dozen times. I just am not an electric guitar player, but this is a very nice guitar.

Epiphone has some decent Gibson knockoffs in that range. If you play a Taylor which is 25 and 1/2 scale though, Fender is the way to go and they have tons of really good quality mexican Strats and teles in your budget. I realize you said you didn't want a Fender but for the money you will be hard pressed to beat them at the value game and they all play good and they all play the same more or less. Kinda like Taylors.

If you can get it outta yer head that you need a NEW guitar, look at used off-short PRS electrics - the "revised" Santana SE (with or without trem) and Tremonti SE are great guitars. Amazing guitars for the price. They can be had used for about what you're asking, and for not much more than that ($500ish or less) new.

A slightly used G&L or Hamer. Better than what most custom shops put out and relatively inexpensive also.

2 & 4. Epi Explorer & Dot. Pickups are pedestrian at best (unless you're speaking of Epi's new upscale line of instruments). It probably wouldn't hurt to swap out the switch-gear for higher quality parts as well 3. PRS Santana - the revised Santana SE is a *****in' instrument outta the box 5. You could probably find an American Standard Strat for somewhere around $425-450. I'd strongly recommend an American Strat - easy resale, better hardward, typically better build quality and assembly.

Get a used Peavey T-60 from the late 70's - mid 80's. They were Peavey's first guitar and it was a winner that got no respect.
Single coil and humbucking capabilties in a very unique setup. The neck is nice and thin too. You get the best of Fender and Gibson in one guitar for around $200.
