Default BR800 mic recording acoustics

Im using a new Boss BR800 portable digital recorder running a Sure57. Trying to record an HD-28 at the sound hole. Seems really boomy and not real crisp. The guitar sounds great normally. Im wondering if recording at the sound hole is the way to go. I did a condenser recording and it sounds more balanced. I want the punch of the 57 however. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dave

If you mic near the sound hole you will gets lots of bass and a boomy sound. No surprise there.

For more treble you should move the mic towards the bridge, maybe even behind the bridge.

Many people like the mic at the 2th fret pointing sligtly towards the body.

If you move the mic farther away you will get a more balanced sound, it's more like what you or a real listener would get, but you do pick up more room noise that will make it harder to mix.

Be fearless, try lots of mic positions and trust your ears.

Hi Archtop...
Did you perhaps mean 12th fret?

I like about 14-18'' out from the neck/body joint whether that is 12, 13, or 14th fret. And I don't aim it toward the soundhole at all.

I've never recorded an acoustic with an SM-57 or -58. I'd have to play with the distance, because they sure loose their 'oomph' when backed off the mouth by more than about 2 inches...

the BR800 has internal mics too, they work OK for me.

Sorry, meant 12th fret, of course.

I use the 57 to record my amps. I guess a decent condensor mic is better for Acoustic recording?
