Default Anyone else frustrated with the whole relicing thing?

I know the whole relicing thing is strictly personal preference, but is anyone else frustrated by the whole thing? My local store has had lots of different custom shop fenders in over the years and every time i look at one and see the price tag i roll my eyes at it.

A brand new guitar that's just been beaten up to deliberately look old and worn and then charge customers 3 times as much as what a regular new guitar would cost.... I just can't see the point... is "fake wear" really what people think is appealing on a guitar?

Doesn't bother me at all. I like a well done relic although I'd never pay a premium price for one.

The problem is that too many relics look fake - that I don't like but I don't care if someone else is buying one.

Relics remind me of enhancement plastic surgery. It discredits the real thing.

I would never buy a guitar that had purposely been beat up just to make it look old or well used. But some people like the look. If no one were interested in these guitars, makers would not keeping making them. Somebody wants these guitars.

To me, it's not worth any personal frustration. It's simply another buying choice, one I'm not interested in.

In my world, Buffalo wing sauce = beer.

It is amusing that people do this intentionally to their instruments yet other people obsess over every slight ding or scratch on theirs.

It has been my general observation that yes, people do have varying opinions and preferences.

Frustrated? No. But I think it’s inane.

Leave one sitting on my bench long enough and it will collect a ding or two. I just tell people that they do not have to concern themselves with protecting the guitar from that first scratch, I put a few on it so they can just go and enjoy it without any worries.

It doesn't frustrate me, but I don't really understand the desire.

Doesnt bother me, but dont fully understand it. Im old enough to pre-date “relic jeans”. New jeans were always a dark indigo blue, stiffer than a cardboard box! I saw and appreciated the comfort of stonewashed jeans. My grandfather (who never owned a pair of denim anything) would laugh at us kids for buying worn-out dungarees! I just cant figure paying extra for dents and scratches and fading...then pay for a nice case!

One more thought on relics...other than very few exceptions (Streetmaster series) you dont see relic-ed acoustics, at least nowhere near as much as electrics.

I have nothing against New "Relicing".

It's just a type of finish option on a new instrument.

I do prefer finding guitars/basses that have "Natural" wear from years of playing.

If you look hard enough, you can find used instruments that have been lovingly bruised and scarred from playing use.

I found my '74 Fender Jazz bass in a pawnshop a few years ago for $59.95.

I personally think it looks AMAZING because the wear doesn't look fake.

Here's some pics:

If any of my guitars looked "relic'd" I would strip it down and refinish it.
