Default DAW-control footswitch?

Anyone use a footswitch to control DAW functions when recording by themselves? I was thinking it would be really handy to be able to do a few key transport functions (record, stop, save, etc.) with the press of a foot, rather than having to turn to the keyboard all the time. (Yes, sometimes just set to loop & record multiple takes can be a simple workflow, but there are other situations as well.)

I use Reaper, so it's easy to customize MIDI or keyboard triggers for all sorts of actions.

If you use a pedal for something like this, what type? MIDI? Bluetooth? USB? Which brand/model do you use? Thanks!

I don't use a pedal

For Pro Tool I use the Avid Control app on my iPad
I believe you can set up something similar with Reaper but you have to go thru a number of steps in Reaper to get it going

You can definitely use another device as a remote for reaper. But it would be way handier to not even have to take my hands off the guitar to tap buttons. I will likely try something even if I don't get any input here, I was just wondering if anybody had practical experience or recommendations.

I don't use a foot controller but use a couple MIDI controllers that interface via USB for various things like volume control and expression, etc. There are certainly programmable MIDI foot controllers that are ON/OFF you could use to do what you want. I just saw several on Amazon.

You'll need to program your DAW to work with it.

I have two Bluetooth pedals that between them can control 6 functions of my daw. Very helpful.

Which ones? Do you have them send MIDI or HID (keyboard)?
