I liked that. Great advice and a simple way to explain the concept. I wish someone had said it that way to me a long time ago; I would have fumbled around a lot less.

Thanks! Good essay. I knew it was easy. After a lifetime of repetition.

As a kid I remember Washington Square and the days you could take lessons with Dave Van Ronk and Rev. Gary Davis. My early teachers though were a record player, "Sing Out" magazine, and asking players I ran into a whole lot of questions.

I enjoyed that article. When I started playing in 1968, my Harmony guitar came with a book from the 1930s entitled: "Play Guitar in Five Minutes." It took longer than that of course.
The writer's method was hit the bass note, strum the rest. Do that for everything. Strangely enough, that's basically my style today on acoustic. Hit the bass note, strum and find a few extra notes in the other 5 strings. Rinse and repeat. |

The lesson I get out of this story. (and agree whole heartedly with)
Is, surround yourself with musicians that are better than you. And play live if you can. Meaning in front of audiences. When having to perform, you will think less and less about how to play. And just play. |

Great article! And the mention of Van Ronk & Gary Davis brings back fond memories of The Phila Folk Festival in the 60's. And some of the music played in the fields was every bit as entertaining as what was played on the stage.
