A major :A B C# D E F# G#

Am (1 b3 5) = A C D
Am9 (1 b3 5 b7 9) A C D G B

But it's Am9/G, so it's an Am9 with a G root.

EDIT:
I understand your question. It's not Am9 and Am9/G, but Am & Am/G.

Hello Jhensman

There's a little finesse that Matthews uses throughout where he is hammering on to the 2nd string at the 1st fret: Open B to C (from the 9th or 2nd to the minor 3rd). The overall harmony makes for a Minor 9th. The first shape implies the 9th even though the G (Minor 7th or b7th) is not in the chord. The second example has the G (Minor 7th or b7th) in the bass making it an inversion. In this case the 3rd inversion (b7th in the bass).

I respectively beg to differ with Long813 though I've seen inversions written both ways. However when naming a chord extension, it is acceptable to use the full name. For example:

_____ _____ _____
E...A...D...G...B...E
6...5...4...3...2...1: Some 3rd inversion Chord Examples

X...1...2...0...1...0: C7/Bb
X...X...0...0...0...0: Em7/D
2...X...0...0...0...3: GM7/F#
X...3...0...2...3...1: Dm7/C
3...X...2...0...1...0: Am7/G
1...2...0...0...0...3: G7/F
3...0...2...0...2...0: A7/G

0...3...3...2...1...1: FM7/E
X...0...4...4...3...2: Bm7/A

and so on... That is my understanding. rP

I think I've just gotten my add and extension chords mixed up I keep forgetting which one can have the 7 omitted

I've got to say, for all the Dave haters out there...

You know you're doing okay when Willie covers one of your songs

Don't like.

Also I think the D9/F# should be D/F#, it sounds less dissonant and flows better in the song.

I Like them both...Dave really isn't fingering the high F# on the 2nd fret of the 1st string. I have added the option. rP:-)
