Default Behringer Audio Interface for $40

Looking for an inexpensive interface for guitar - computer to mess around with in Garage Band. Will this one suffice?
Thanks in advance!

Ummm....WHICH one? I own the Behringer UMC404HD seen here: https://www.amazon.com/BEHRINGER-Aud...annel-UMC404HD

I picked it up almost a year ago when it was under $100 but haven't used it much because:

1. Drivers are terrible. You'll see this mentioned a lot on the internet. I can still only get 2 channel input (this thing has 4 and that's one of the reasons I bought it...for "futureproofing")

2. I downloaded some DAWS (tried Audacity, and a few other Windows based as well as Reaper) but never could really figure them out much beyond plug it all in and press record. I STILL have no ability to edit, modify the inputs, etc, etc though that's clearly on me and my inability to "get" how that's done.

On the positive side it does make pretty recordings and it's easy enough as a plug and play (other than those darn drivers). The preamps are nice on that thing!

So which model Behringer interface are you considering?

I wouldn't buy anything less than the UMC202HD. A quick check on Sweetwater came up with a $99 price tag.

I have one of these and the larger UMC404HD.

They run really well with Apple OS-X and you don't need a driver.
You can get very low latency and the mic pre-amps are fine.

I stick to my recommendation for a UMC202HD minimum.

The UM2 you are looking at is a much lower quality device.

Yes, it will "work" but the main issue is will it work for you and, if so, for how long? That was the main reason I chose one that was more expandable than the Scarlett models. Now those ARE more expensive and so Behringer solved both problems at once. I'd advise you think about at least one model up from the one you're looking at. Your choice but you'll likely end up spending more later.

+1. The UM2 inputs & outputs are sorely limited. The UM202HD gives a greater flexibility in the future. You may think you'll never need two xlr or instrument inputs but it's better to have it than not to have it & need it.

I ran across this for sale by one of our forum sponsors last week when I was considering something similar. A few more bucks and I bet it's a step up on quality from the Behringer.....

Question DEAL

You get what you pay for . A interface at that price has my mind thinking
•¿• Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm •?•

Focusrite Scarlett [ Solo ] is around $ 100.00 -

The headphone output is second to none , really loud and most importantly , clear and clean.

I'd sweat it out and save the needed $'s and get the Solo , the premps on the new 2nd.Generation
units are not shabby IMHO- YMMV .

I have a 6i6 and it has operated flawlessly sine I got it - installed on Win 10 64 bit went smoothly
without an issue .

These second Generation units are better than the same models that were
1st.Gen. so make sure it's a 2nd Gen. Even after the firmware the 1st. are said to not be as good
as the 2nd. Gen. .

EZ :

"Will this one suffice ?" obviously unless someone has actually used one, the answer can only be "maybe".... But I am always leery of the cheapest as my experience with " the cheapest option" has usually been ,,,it may work but be problematic or short lived....

I don't want to start a flame war here but the Solo is just as hampered as the Behringer model the OP suggested as far as limited inputs. Sure the 2nd gen is better than the 1st but the Behringer HD models have expansion capability that cannot be compared to the FocusRite in terms of pricing. In this case you don't "get what you pay for"....you actually get MORE. I'd immediately take issue with the "headphone output is second to none" statement though as they are equaled in the Behringer UMCHD line). Again, I have nothing against the FR model line. The Behringer just costs a lot less for the same functionality (other than the driver issues I stated at the onset which may very well be limited to me and my use of Win7).

Humm, to clarify a bit first: looks like the OP is not looking at the HD models, he is looking at at the U-Phoria model.

second: While it true that the cost of electronics typically goes down for the same quality of components particularly at the lower price end of things. There is still no reason to believe that the basic laws of economics ( for which flames do not apply) somehow do not apply to Behringer. For example if the quality of the raw electronics and features is similar to higher priced units, then there must be compromise in some other area ... Which in the case of the Behringer U-Phoria appears to be build quality (according to the review linked below ) But it does look like at the low price ( about the price of nice dinner out) the OP could try it and determine for himself

I use an EMU1212m PCIE. I've been around awhile.

I don't have a problem with him stepping up to a Scarlett--even the 2i2 that I recommended to a buddy who was starting out and had the money for that. Lkristians can spend however much he wants: $40, $100, $200, Apogee, Lavry, whatever.

And everybody spends more later...eventually, on guitars, ADDA conversion, preamps, mics, etc.
