If triplets - or triplet feel - is consistent throughout the piece, or the majority of the time, then 6/8 would be chosen to keep it simpler to both write and read (avoiding all those brackets and "3"s). Right. In my version you can select "triplet swing", which makes pairs of 8ths sound like 2+1 triplets, so a 2/4 bar of four 8th notes sounds like a bar of 6/8. (My version doesn't have a "lilt" option, however. ) |

Steve, all these figures being banded about here don't mean much to me so
here's some lift, swing, call it what you will - in reel time - http://youtu.be/AgM1mwGxLf8 http://youtu.be/2tnWxsNshZQ http://youtu.be/MH6qSHHnTm0

My point all along has been that in this tune you have the following timing throughout the refrain:
and I tried to express these note durations in number form as 123-1-123-1-123-1-123-1. I thought I was being pretty clear as I made the point early on in reference to the score. This is what is in the score (by the composer of the music , but what does he know?) and to my ears in the youtube video of The Irish Rovers. This rhythm fits into 4/4 or 2/2, not into 6/8. If your ears hear (or you just prefer changing the rhythm to) two tied eighth notes in a group of three eighth notes (giving note lengths of 12-1-12-1-12-1-12-1) that is fine with me. Then you could use 6/8 as well as 4/4 or 2/2

Yeah, and in that part of the recording it could also be 4/4 or 2/2. In other parts of tune (almost every measure) 6/8 does not fit. See my prior post above for why.

Then you would have to be saying the official score of this music is written incorrectly since there is no way
to make that into 6/8 without changing the timing of the notes. Or do you disagree with this too?
