Athletes with Physical Deformities
The thread about NFL kicker Tom Dempsey (RIP) got me thinking about athletes who have competed at a high level with physical deformities.
Jim Abbott - Anyone remember him? MLB pitcher with only one hand. He would wear his glove over his 'stub'. Jim threw a no-hitter in 1993. What a proud moment. Your thoughts on Jim and on others? |

I remember Abbott and watched him pitch on TV a few times. I’m too young to remember Pete Grey, but he played during a war-time year for the Browns. He was an outfielder who rapidly transferred the ball from glove to hand to throw.

I was introduced to Jim Abbott years ago. Seemed like a nice guy. It goes without saying, but anyone who can throw a no hitter in the bigs is in an elite class, which makes him even more elite in that sense.
Even better for me was who did the introducing, Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker. The few minutes I chatted with Bob were memorable. A real down to earth, funny guy. |

Calvin Peete. PGA golfer with permanently fused bent elbow. Great ball striker. Won a bunch of events in the 80’s.

In the current news cycle there's a story about Al Kaline being a victim of polio when he was young. They removed about 2 inches of bone from one of his feet. He said "Its like having a tooth ache there all the time"---he worked around it pretty good!

Jim Kyte is the only NHL player to be deaf. He played 600 games, mostly with Winnipeg, back in the 80s. Thinking there will not be any other deaf NHL players.

Mordecai Brown
"Three-Finger" Morecai Brown pitched in the majors for mostly the Cubs. He was on two World Series teams and is in the Hall of Fame. He lost parts of his right hand in a farm accident but still managed a great career. He had the lowest ERA of any pitcher with 200 or more wins.
