4 versions and counting
I'm working on something and it starts out pretty decent and then just falls apart. I'll be starting the 5th version tomorrow morning. I might just shelf it and start something new.
Rant over.

I get it. I am working on a new song my writing partner and I just finished and have attempted about thousand lead guitar parts and I cannot for the life of me leave enough “space” in the lead lines. I keep wanting to play too many notes. The acoustic parts and the electric rhythm is fine and have the “air” that I want in the song. I keep going all Steve Vai on it when it needs B. B. King.

I always get a chuckle when I do 17 takes at a guitar part only to realize that I just need to play three notes |

That’s normal, I think. Unless you’re composing purely on paper - and not many people I know can do that with any degree of facility - it’s common to experiment and work things out. With time and experience, sometimes you get to a satisfying result a little faster, but even great artists like John Coltrane had to work on their chops.

I shelved it for now. Something else started to develop, but I'm having one of those days where everything sounds wrong.

It is amazing what can be done musically with the right three notes played the right way.

I have had more than one of those days as well. The problem usually goes away once I put the guitar down.

That was my cure also. What a coincidence,

Seriously, yes. Come back to it later, and the problem has often sorted itself out.
