Default Wilko Johnson death - age 75

Not actually acoustic related, but sad to just read that the marvellously eccentric Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood fame has just died. Anyone who hasn't come across him before, look him up. A short video below. Wish I had seen the band live. Wilko's driving guitar matched pefectly with Lee Brilleaux's vocal/harp/guitar. Pity they fell out.

A very sad day indeed. A great player and a great band. Very sad to hear that, having survived ‘terminal’ pancreatic cancer, Wilko has now gone far too young. RIP Wilko, you were one of the greats.

Very sad to read this. He had a unique style and was quite a character. What he went through with his cancer experience was remarkable, and we were fortunate to have him around as long as we did.

I first saw Dr. Feelgood in my last year at school on a music programme called 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' back in England. That would have been 1976-7. I was instantly blown away by his style of playing a Telecaster. No other guitar player I liked played in that way.

I think this song is a tribute to Dr. Feelgood? Live video below lyrics (which I'm not sure are totally accurate)....

Already late to the union hall
Tired and dragging my feet on the ground
Doctor Feelgood is right down my street
I feel run over and it hurt me sweet
"Doc Feel, and I'm getting weak in the knees"

And he said, "Cry tough, son, cry tough"

I told him about my dancing blues
And why I had to fill the bantam nights
"Doctor Feelgood, I promised this lady
If I can't dance, she gonna break my nose"
He said, "Loosen up, boy, 'cause I've got the antidote"

And he said, "Cry tough, for that girl on the floor
Help her up and watch her beg for more"
Cry tough, go down your soul
You just need another shot of rock and roll"
Just need another shot of rock and roll
Take it away

I feel I'm crippled since they fooled me at school
Until I caught this new kind of spook
Called dancing fever I have to have it

Crazy Doctor Feelgood encouraged my habit
All his time he would devote to discover the antidote
And he said, "Cry tough on your crutches too
You were born to be a dancing fool??

Cry tough, go down your soul
You just need another shot of rock and roll
Yeah, just need another shot of rock and roll
Look out

I need another shot of rock and roll
Need another shot of rock and roll
Need another shot of rock and roll

Default RIP Wilko.

Wilko Johnson the hard driving power centre of famous East London band Dr. Feelgood has finally left us aged 75.

He lost his close friend and band member Lee Brilleau in 1994 to cancer,
He lost his wife to cancer in 2004,
In 2013, he was told he had terminal cancer.
He elected not to have treatment and organised his "farewell" tour.

In 2014, still alive after the farewell tour, and feeling "OK" he cut an album with Rodger Daltrey... in eight days! "I thought that was going to be the last thing I ever did"

Radical major surgery followed, he recovered and continued to tour and gig.

Wilco Johnson died on 21 November 2022, at home, at the age of 75.

A full life of a remarkable and eccentric musician, and much loved world wide.

He he is explaining his guitar technique.

here he is with the band in 2010.

Gonna be noisy up in heaven tonight!
