Best way to re-attach a sound hole label
Hi, Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on the best way to re attach a sound hole label. I don't really want to use glue, I'm thinking a thin double sided tape or I saw these glue dot things that come on a sheet, probably one in each corner and one in the middle would suffice.
am I on the right track? Thanks |

I've watched a lot of Jerry Rosa's videos where he does this. He uses glue (I think maybe something light like an Elmer's or a very light wood glue). He wipes on a very thin layer and uses long tweezers to place it into the sound hole. Then he uses a paintbrush to wipe the whole label until it is well seated.
I don't think two sided tape or dots would give you enough coverage to prevent the label from curling. Look up any of his videos on YouTube (Rosa Stringworks) where he is finishing a custom guitar or mandolin and you can watch him do it.

I’d use 3M spray adhesive. Give the back of the label a light coating, let it dry for a minute, and use long tweezers to install it.

Why don't you want to use glue? Taping seems more difficult to me but I'm sure it would work fine too.

White glue or yellow carpenter's glue (titebond) should be permanent. You dont want it to fall out again, do you?
Or contact the maker and find what they use. |

I took the label out of my Martin OM-28 Marquis (I hate Martin’s cheap-looking labels), put it in an empty ziplock plastic packet and stored it in the case’s accessory compartment. When I sold the guitar, the label in the case went with it.

When I label my builds I use an Elmer's glue stick, the kind the kids use at school.
It doesn't wrinkle the paper like a wet glue sometimes will.

Off the subject, but I'm one of those people who likes to put stickers on my guitar cases. Sometimes they come partially unstuck and sometimes I sell a guitar and/or case and remove the stickers, some of which I may want to reuse. The Elmer's glue stick does a good job, and cleans off with a damp rag. If you need to store the stickers, wax paper works.
I know some will think stickers are dumb in general, and would never use them anywhere, let alone on a guitar case, but I've got a pretty cool collection of music-related stickers. And I always know which identical black case is mine, and it's less likely to be taken home by someone else!

Agreed. Glue stick will give the cleanest result with the most control. Very light application to the back of the label only.

I typically use Titebond and I also spray Nitro over my labels to seal in the ink. |

I use 3M 465 transfer adhesive, the same one used to attach pickguards. It may be overkill, but it does simplify the job by making the label "peel and stick". I tend to avoid water based adhesives (most wood glues) because the water can cause a paper label to wrinkle. In the old days, I used rubber cement or 3M #77 spray adhesive.

Thanks, I'll get a glue stick. I had some of that 3M spray adhesive and did a test on a piece of paper, seemed like it made it too wet ..... and not in a good way.........
The can was sitting in the garage for a long time so that probably doesn't help. Glue sticks seem safer for me but the 3M 465 transfer adhesive seems easy to use as well. |

Hi John, I'm assuming that 465 tape is very thin? I have a roll of 3M double side tape but it's really thick.
