Default Weird Experience with a Guitar Cable...

Hi there!

I had a new CD launch a week ago. At the sound check, I plugged in my acoustic guitar and it was indescribably LOUD! Not just LOUD but VERY LOUD.

The guy on the mixer said "Have you got a new battery?" I had, but so what?

I turned the volume down on the guitar AND the mixer guy turned down the gain on his mixer...bit it was still so LOUD. LOUDER than I have ever heard it before.

Anyway, we managed to get it down to an acceptable volume through the PA.

Later, when the show began, we found the guitar lead had failed and there was no volume at all. Of course, I switched leads and the loudness returned to normal levels.

The next day, I examined the failed cable. Both 1/4 inch jack plugs were fine but the lead was still not working. I finally discovered one of the conductors somewhere along the length of the cable was broken. I junked the cable, kept the plugs (as you do) and replaced it.

My question is this:
Why should a fault like this produce such an increase in volume (albeit short-lived). What WAS going on?

Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Maybe he had you plugged into a mic input.

The cable later failing was the coincidence that had you switch cables and he then plugged you into the right input, hit the high-Z switch, or maybe a fancy Neutrik jack on the mixer worked correctly when the cable was replaced.

Yep, I almost put this down to coincidence. Sometimes to the sound man will make an adjustment without you knowing and then it can seem as though it was part of your rig that was the issue. I have definitely had that before.

Just to clarify...

The cable in question was between my guitar and my footpedals. I know the sound guy and I'm sure he had me plugged into the right socket on his mixer.

It was an unbalanced source/cable.

Thanks for your replies and questions. This may remain a mystery!

Reminds me of college days they would not provide very bright lights for the dorms. But they would replace bulbs that blew. So, many of the guys "pinged" their bulbs, which would glow Very brightly for a few days, then die.

(To "ping" a bulb, you put forefinger to thumb, then let flick it at the bulb.)
