I called on my purchase of a new Martin and they knocked off 15%. Glad about it too.

Well, I got an email from Sweetwater about a special price on a looper I was looking at and I emailed back. They're answer was to call. I guess they didn't want the price in print without a commitment from me?

I agree the price is most likely below MAP. I only get irritated if I call or email and its not a great price. What's the point?

True. I get annoyed if the business is advertising some monster sale, but the price they offer is at MAP or just a few shekels below. I mean, don't pee on my leg and expect me to believe that it's raining...

Ok, rant over.
So if you’re buying a new Martin, you’d rather pay the $6000 MAP price instead of picking up the phone, thereby possibly saving $1000 or more ?

I don’t understand this logic at all. Please explain.

Sure I'd rather see the price but from a stores viewpoint, you have to engage w/ them and that's makes for a better chance at a sale. And we all know some folks can haggle a better deal, some folks are happy to pay retail, so the price isn't just one number, it's a floating point.

If it's something I really want rather than just tire-kicking', I prefer to deal w/ a human, better chance at a good deal and the possibility of better info on the instrument (if you ask the right questions).

If I knew that calling up/emailing would get me a better price, of course I would, but if you are window shopping and don't want to commit just yet, wasting people's work time with phone calls about a sale that is months down the road isn't fair to them.

Barry,
I’ve also been put off by this.

But having read through this thread it now makes sense that contractual obligations prevent dealers from advertising the deal they are offering. I’ve changed my stance.

Now, why would a private seller do this? Thinking it may decrease tire kickers? I would think it may actually increase the number of communications requiring some sort of response. But I have no experience with this.

Thanks,
Tom

I agree that if you aren't really in the market to buy, why ask for pricing? However, they are there to provide the info and they will understand when potential buyers are price shopping. All you are doing is asking for a price. That's really not an inconvenience. Many/most buyers will shop around before making a purchase decision, so it is to be expected.

The OP might be referring to used gear. I have seen this quite a bit on GBase.com. Many times when looking for Vintage D-18s or 28s the listing will say Call For Price and obviously doesn't have anything to do with MAP.

New guitars; Not bothered
Used guitars; turn off

I'm surprised it's legal here. MAP sounds like price fixing to me.

This has been my experience. You might try a phone call to see if they'll give you their price. It could save you a fair amount of money, you never know. I have had some good luck in this direction.
