Is this Brazilian Rosewood?
Does this look like Brazilian Rosewood?
It has the scent of roses on the end cut. Thanks! |

Definitely not Brazilian. My woody sense tells me Pomelle Bubinga. That's where I'd put my wooden coins.

Doesn't look like it to me. Why would you think it might be?

It was sold to me as Brazilian Rosewood.

If it was sold as Brazilian did you get the CITES certificate with it? Or at least a certificate proving it was imported prior to 1992?
I agree with the others that it does not look like Brazilian, but on the other hand there is a huge range of looks and tones that are found in Brazilian.

Did you pay a premium for it as Braz? I'm not trying to be negative, but there is nothing about those photos which would make me think of Brazilian rosewood. I'm not an expert by any means on braz, so I could well be far off base.
Whatever it actually is, (I'm inclined to agree with the bubinga call), I hope you find good use for it. |

No CITIES documents, I did not pay a lot and I can get a refund if it is not. I got some shavings to do a luminosity test with a black light.
I think one will be hard pressed to be able to get CITIES documents for any Brazilian Rosewood...We have wood that's been sitting around since the early 80's and I don't even have receipts for much less CITIES, because CITIES had not even been invented yet. I have a neck I never completed with Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard from Luthier's Mercantile and curly Koa from the 80's and not receipt much less CITIES docs for that either. Even for wood such as Koa, which is not listed, how the heck would I even begin to prove I bought it from White Brother's in Alameda when they had Koa or for all the guys who bought wood from The Tree from Hand Loggers in San Rafael, when they had it in the 80's, where are you going to get your CITIES docs for that and who kept their receipt should Genuine Mahogany become listed like BR? Thanks for your opinions! |
