Smile Jack Stepick Baritone Weissenborn

Hey Fellow Guitar Enthusiasts

I recently received a VERY Nice Custom Baritone Weissenborn from Luthier Jack Stepick.

VERY pleased with this axe, and the experience of this custom build and getting to know Jack a bit.

Jack Stepick Custom Weissenborn baritone:

Walnut/Cedar with contrasting Flamed Maple binding

Oversized 16.25” Lower bout

4.5” deep at butt, gently tapering up the neck

27” scale

Gotoh Mini 510 (18x1) tuners, color TBD

Traditional Weissenborn bridge shape

High contrast FB dots at frets 3,5, 7x2, 9, 12 ellipse, 15, 17, and 19x2

Binding markers, same. Extending to the top of binding so visible from above and side

Light dark light “fret markers”. Again, for high visibility on dark stages

Jack’s standard solid linings are a nice touch!!!

I found Jack on Reverb when one of his instruments showed up in my feed.

I called him and we spoke about my wishes and John Kinnaird builds and features. Jack suggested a custom and we got busy pretty quick. Jack was easy to work with and it was done in just over 4 months even though he had some health issues during the process.

Jack is a retired cabinet maker and a lifer musician who plays (and builds) mostly lap slide and resonators. Quite well IMO

Label says #050 so he has built quite a few now

I have had about a dozen Weissys over the last 15 years. From budget to spendy Luthier built.
Including an original Herman Weissenborn from 1920 or so. Also another normal sized high end custom I liked well but eventually sold.

This one really takes the cake!

Pics to follow

Cheers

Paul

You can see some of the finish oddness in the “sunburst” on the top

Not much problem on back or sides

More soon…

Smile One boo-boo… sigh

Unfortunately, Jack sent this in a new Access gig bag which apparently was still off-gassing and the Nitro finish was softened enough to mar the appearance a bit in a couple places. Which you can see in pic at the butt, and on the top. Kind of looks like a weird sunburst on the top! Haha

Tim Luranc assured me it can be fixed pretty easy and I opted not to ship it back to Jack, even though he offered to fix it himself.

The Sound of this thing is really Beautiful and LOUD, too.

I am really Happy with this, despite the finish issues. Which are purely cosmetic

Let’s see if I can link to Jack’s blog site….

Here you can see the imprint of the bottom of the gig bag….

Oh, Well. A fab experience and a FABULOUS Weissenborn too! Tim L will give it some TLC and I expect it will look spiffy.

Apparently Nitro is pretty easy to work on. Whew!

Cheers

Congratulations Paul! Slide sounds so good when you play it and I’m sure this sounds spectacular! I look forward to hearing it in person-

Jack is building me a style 1 25" standard Weissenborn now. Very easy to deal with, beautiful work in the braces, a lot of sensible build decisions. Looking forward to delivery.
