Default FINAL REVIEW: Tom Sands model S - Redwood / Brazilian

Hi everyone,

After a really enjoyable first build with Tom (https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=579993), I put another deposit at delivery of the guitar and my turn is now up!

To complement my model M in spruce/blackwood, we decided to go with a model S and I asked Tom to pick the woods he would favor to build me his best possible guitar, and to go in the same minimalistic direction of his recent builds (especially Salacia, which is documented on the forum and looks absolutely beautiful).

Therefore we landed on some great looking redwood from Richard Hoover's personnal stash as well as Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides. We will go for a no rosette look and let the beauty of that top shine through.

Keeping on with the minimalistic look, we'll use Brazilian Rosewood for the binding with some green purfling (and maybe some other touches of green throughout the build). Tom jokingly calls it "stealth binding".

Tom is a firm believer of that wood combo and my personal experience with Will McNicol's model M certainly convinced me (an absolute delight of a guitar). I got the change to play it during our annual workshop in Brittany, France.

For the bridge, fretboard and head plates, we'll also use Brazilian rosewood to tie things up nicely.

I am really excited for this new build, and to share the progress with you as it goes along.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Will, your guitar is spectacular and was the inspiration for this one. I only hope I can get a similar package in a smaller format

I am happy to report that the build has advanced and the guitar is currently Tom's main focus. Receiving pictures is always a delight, and brings me back to fond memories of my furst build. Below is the top and back which have been sanded and put to size. I find the woods to be of top qualities and I am quite excited about the minimalistic design choices we've made. For example using Brazilian as "stealth binding" with just a line of green purfling and the NOsette (no rosette) which has surfaced in Tom's recent builds...

More pictures of the build progressing. The headplate, fingerboard and bridge will also be Brazilian. The first picture shows the color of the tuners' heads and bridge pins

Tom has been making progress and the voicing is now complete! Always a special moment when you think most of the guitar tone is now determined despite still being in the early stages of the build. Tom sent me a few glamorous shots that I am happy to share with you all. The guitar will be #60 and has been named Lucia, carrying on Tom's tradition .

A layer of shellac has been added and I am really digging the no rosette look. The minimalistic apparence with just the pop of green talks to me, and less is more as they say.

And lastly, keeping up with the theme of understated appearance, Tom has selected Brazilian for both the front and back of the headstock. Still just a splash of coloring on the headstock

My dear Marc I'll have to comply.

The box is now closed and Tom is now working on the bindings. Again it'll be a very organic package and the excitement starts to mount.

Also throwing a picture of Ted, Tom's apprentice
