25+ years for my Martin D-28. It was OK, but really wish I had found a Breedlove much sooner and not hung on to it that long.

Default What is the longest time you have owned a specific guitar (revised)

I got this Sigma DM3 when I was a young teenager in 1984 and still have it. This guitar could tell some stories.

The longest I've OWNED a guitar is 49 years (ask me again next year ). However, my OLDEST guitar, which I've owned since 1976, is a 1957 Gibson ES-225.

I've owned my dad's old Kay since I broke the neck when I was 13, so it's been mine for over 50 years. It's technically no longer a guitar, as I converted what remained into an octave mandolin.

Hooray! Nice post.

My wife has never bought me a guitar, but she’s never kvetched when I’ve bought them for myself. We have a deal - I never touch the mortgage money or the family budget at all, but acquire my instruments from the money I make playing music or through trades. (I’m a pretty good horse trader.) And she never gives me a hard time about yet another guitar showing up at the house.

When I first got online with an acoustic guitar newsgroup back in the mid-1990’s, my guitar transactions buying, selling and trading skyrocketed in terms of frequency. One day she gently remonstrated with me about it and I said:

“Sweetheart, I could be collecting Italian shotguns or restoring old cars.”

She thought about for a minute, then said:

“Thank you, dear,” kissed me on the forehead and left me to it.

The subject has never arisen since, bless her heart.

I've had my 68/71 FrankenTele since 1974, and I got my Martin 018NY a year later.

Rudy, that conversion to an octave mandolin is remarkably elegant, and an astute choice on your part. I admire it and want one like it!

If you wake up in the middle of the night hearing some rustling in your music room, and walk in to find some guy who looks like me poking through your instruments looking for that octave mandolin, it won’t be me - I’m not the octave mandolin thief you’re looking for....

That’s one of the coolest “reimagined” instruments I’ve ever seen. What kind of tuners did you put on it? Did you make a new neck for it yourself or did you take it to a pro?

I have my Martin D-28 Brazilian that I bought in 1967. It is still in great shape and gets played from time to time in my studio.

I still have the 2nd and 3rd guitars that I owned. The 4th too, but I bought that one ten years later.

Number 2 is an AIMS Les Paul, black finish with gold hardware and a maple neck, got it in '76.

Number 3 is my Alvarez copy of a herringbone D-28, I guess I got that one in '79 or maybe '80.

I still have my first "real" guitar, a "66 Gibson B-25 I bought from a buddy in '75. Best $75 I ever spent.
