Is my original MOTU 828 good enough?
So, after many years of not recording, I'm starting to plan to record a CD. I have an original MOTU 828. It works. Are there better options now? I'll be recording mostly acoustic guitar, vocals, banjo, mandolin, violin with virtual bass, and some midi sounds. I'd like to have 2 inputs.
I have a Summit Audio 2BA preamp that has a tube. Any thoughts on this interface subject appreciated. |

Assuming you have Firewire capability with your computer, and the drivers work with your O/S, why not? They still make 828s. However, if you need more inputs, than a newer AI would be the answer. Technology certainly has come a long way and today's lower-priced AIs have good preamps and lower noise floors than ever.

Absolutely! That's a classic and I've owned one for years--still have it somewhere. MOTU stuff is top notch. The only issues are related to firewire as mentioned above. It really comes down to what computer you're using. Modern advancements have left FW, and all peripherals that use it, in the distant past. However, if you still have compatible gear, go for it.

MOTU products are highly regarded. Firewire connectivity is being replaced with USB3 and Thunderbolt connectivity in newer computers. However, a simple cable will allow you to connect a firewire device to a Thunderbolt equipped computer. You still need to make sure that any MOTU drivers for the 828 will work with more current computer operating systems because without that it won't work.

I would use it. The 2BA is supposed to be very nice for the money as well. I'd focus on mics (depending on what you already have). They will have more impact on your sound IMO.

I would go with what you have and use both, connect the Summit to the 828
You would then have the option of the tube or the SS circuit from the Summit, as well as the SS on the 828 then just see which you prefer .
