Sound Devices USBPre 2
Anybody here have experience/thoughtful (or otherwise) knowledge of this preamp/interface? How good are the mic pres, any glitches, sound-wise or operationally, etc.?

I've been wanting to try one of these out.
I use the Sound Devices 722 and 744 recorders a lot and love them. I think the USB Pre is basically the same preamps without the recorder. Great gear.

I test-drove one at Sweetwater but ended up springing for the four inputs offered by the Apogee Quartet. What I can say is this: the USB Pre2 is clean, both in preamps and conversion, and it is a sturdy little beast (which is more than I can say for the Duet). It requires no special drivers, either. The only downside is the array of dip-switches on the back, and I could see myself growing annoyed by having to reach back there to flip on and off the phantom power. If I had chosen a two-input device, though, I would've chosen the USB Pre2 over the Duet, simply because of the build and lack of a breakout box; they're even, otherwise, to my ears.

Thanks, guys! Two channels are all I need, and going by Sound Devices reputation and build quality I find this to be a reasonably priced product. I have been using my Marantz PMD661 going straight into it's mic preamps and then transferring the file to my Mac; I know there are lots of way less expensive interfaces out there but the feature set on the USBPre 2 and it's really nice metering has no rival that I have found.
This may be a holiday gift to myself! |
