Gibson Super 4000 Chet Atkins. Gibson made a limited run of 25 guitars, PLUS 1 extra, #26, in case something went wrong. Guitar was gifted to an esteemed Gibson employee, brought to the company by Gibson legends, James W. Hutchins & Mike McGuire.

Each custom shop guitar had 2 labels, the Gibson orange label visible through the bass "F" hole, & an off white label visible in the treble "F" hole, signed & dated by the master himself, James W. Hutchins. This guitar is dated Nov 10, 1997. The employee, from whom I purchased it, played w. Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, & other greats. He was voted #60 of the top 100 acoustic guitar players of all time in 2018. This guitar has been played Tommy Emmanuel #9, Lawrence Juber #13 and Muriel Anderson #73.

The original 25 sold for $40k. The 26 guitars were made in 1997-98. All 26 have the 2 labels, 1 signed by the builder, James W. Hutchins & the other w. the serial number/model. The guitars were an orange-ish burst, except for mine which has a custom wine red burst. The orange label has the model number as: S-4000 WR designating the model & the custom wine red color (WR). This is NOT what the 25 in the series say, which is Chet S-4000. This guitar couldn’t be part of the 25 per the contract. It does not say "Chet" before the model number.

The original owner had 2 custom high output, gold plated, mini humbucking pickups installed in place of the cool single pickup that is on the 25 in the run. The single pickup was made to Chet's spec & is very smooth & mellow. The dual pickups on mine are similar to Gibson Firebirds, but are custom made for the guitar, again to Chet's spec since Chet was a close friend of the owner who sold to me. The gold plated dual pickups are superior to the 1 humbucker pickup that was used on the 25 guitars. The pickups dual & single, are attached to the pickguard. I have the original pickguard w. gold pickup affixed so the new owner can try & choose. The single pickup has "Chet Atkins" inscribed on it, as do the 25. The owner had a custom, Howard Roberts, art deco tailpiece installed during construction.

The condition: excellent + with following issues:

1 Top binding has some dings
2 Top has a few very minor indentations, otherwise very clean
3 Back is exceptionally clean except for minor dings on binding
4 Headstock, both front & back, super clean
5 Neck exquisite except for minor ding middle of neck @ 4th fret
6 Pickguard clean
7 Tuners very clean
8 Heel has some chips

Notes FROM THE SELLER TO ME: Bruce here are the specifications for the 25 Super Chet 4000. The one I am selling to you is the same but for these differences. 1. 2 Gold Plated Pickups - High Output Mini Humbucking - Same as the Firebird. 2. Color is Custom Nitrocellulose Candy Apple Red burst. 3. Tail Piece is gold plated, Howard Roberts Finger Adjustment. 4. I have the single Humbucking mounted on the pickguard used on the 25. Note: There were only 26 guitars in the original batch. 25 were used for the Chet Atkins Super 4000 program, sold at $40,000. Mine is number #26. Serial numbers in consecutive order for the 25. Only 26 were made during my time at the Custom Shop, 25 were finished as a Honey Burst, & my #26 was done in Red Candy Apple Red, at the same time. I have seen blonde guitars called The Chet Super 4000 of the 25. That is false. Someone is lying, & selling them. FYI, I made this flyer I am sending you, for the program, as I worked for Gibson wearing several hats. I have a background as a Graphics Designer. I did the Art work for the flyer, & oversaw its printing. Guitarists that have played this Super 4000 include Tommy Emmanuel, Muriel Anderson, Lawrence Juber, Stanley Jordan (jazz).

Pickups 2 Gold Plated, High Output Mini Humbucking Firebird Pickups, Custom for Guitar. The original single pickup attached to pickguard used on all 25 Chet Super 4000's is included. It is a special wound floating humbucking pickup w. "Chet Atkins" engraved on top & is attached to the pickguard. Linear sliding volume control mounted beneath pickguard w. ebony knob. Original Chet Atkins engraved pickguard w. attached gold pickup is included but separate. Same as on the 25 Chet $40,000 1997/98 guitars.
