Welcome to my world....I live here. Home of "The Worlds Longest Skating Rink". It's 4.8 miles one way.

It's been frozen here for 3 weeks now.

Just reading this thread makes me shiver. For those living in the freezer section of the world - Best of luck in taking good care of yourselves, your family, your pets, and your guitars.

Best,
Jayne

Today in Mpls. it was -29 degrees when I went to work at 5:00 a.m.

Work in a cabinet shop where one of the boilers was down and it was 57 degrees at my bench.

My room humidifiers are turned off of due to frost on the inside of the windows. The guitar humidifiers are exchanged every couple of days.

But it will be 40 degrees by the weekend with rain! Ice fishing or fly fishing?
Crazy weather here.

Hard for me to comprehend.

I've been sleeping on top of my bed sheet, no covering at all for the last few weeks.
Sometimes I leave the bedroom ceiling fan ticking over to keep the air moving.
We open both our front and back doors (with Fly-screens fitted) and take advantage of any cool breeze that comes through.

I live just outside of Chicago and my humidifier is going through a gallon of water every hour but the humidity is still hovering around 35%. Thank goodness for the Oasis sound hole humidifiers.

It was -40 C/F in Winnipeg this morning. At that temperature, Celsius and Fahrenheit are the same, where in this case, the Twain does meet.

Yes, wood reacts fairly quickly. Obviously, it takes on water faster than it loses but I would say a less than a full day of exposure to low humidity is enough time to cause damage. Bear in mind, 35% humidity is usually not enough to start causing significant issues (just playability issues). However, once you start hitting 30% and below, then you are at risk for more serious issues like soundboard cracks.

We have pretty good heating and two space heaters which is keeping us at about 70° inside. But in spite of having 3 humidifiers going full blast I can't get the humidity up to 30% so all my acoustics are cased with soundhole humidifiers. Just ordered a 4th room humidifier as we are now installing wood floors throughout and want to minimize expansion/contraction.

P.S....Brother and sister-in-law just returned last night from Melbourne where it was 107°F when they left!

Stay warm y'all (not you Brucebubs )
Good move vindibona, protect those acoustics man!
