My Recommendations: Best Guitar Picks Under $10. Add your Faves!
There seem to be endless streams of posts on AGF about really expensive guitar picks and other high-end accessories. I'd like to go the other direction with this thread. What are the really great picks out there that won't set up back the price of a dinner for two, with wine?
As with acoustic guitars, there has never been a better time to buy a great pick for a great price. We are living in the golden age of acoustic guitars and accessories. A bit about myself: I've been playing acoustic guitar over forty years (I don't own an electric). I have been playing genuine tortoise shell picks almost as long. I am the worst kind of tone-chaser you can imagine; I'm never satisfied. So my standards are extremely high. In composing the list below, please be aware that I am comparing all these products to genuine tortoise picks, now highly illegal. This will always be my reference standard. By design this list is incomplete. In compiling it, I am listing only the picks I have actually played. It would be unfair of me to judge another product or company based upon hearsay evidence. i encourage others to add their own. Please limit your recommendations to picks under $10.00. This is my list, in no particular order, of the best guitar picks under $10.00. Feel free to ask any questions of me or other members. Dunlop Ultex Dunlop Primetone Wegen (all models) Jon Pearse Fast Turtles Clayton NuTone Fender Tru-Shell You can get a truly great guitar pick for just a little more than the price of a venti frappicino. Enjoy, Scott |

I really am kind of evangelical about Fender 346 heavy (or extra heavy).
I try others occasionally but keep coming back.

Pearse Fast Turtles in 2.5 and 4mm with the caveat that you re-bevel them.
Fender Tru-shells with the same caveat. Wegen Dippers Dunlop Primetones. Good as bought, better if you re-bevel. |

My favorite inexpensive pick is the TUSQ bone color pick with the gray being a close second. I would probably never have looked past those if I didn’t completely chew one up in one gig. Feel great and sound great just don’t hold up to a heavy hand.

Dunlop Maxgrip Nylon Dunlop Nylon C.T. (Cat Tongue Picks) Wedgie Nylon XT DAVA Control Dunlop "Big Stubby" (Wish the grip was better, though) Dunlop Ultex (though I sometimes break these...) I'll certainly be adding a few to my collection, as this thread progresses!

Nothing fancy for me:
Elderly Instruments Delrin medium for 6 string Fender thin celluloid teardrop for 12 string I may be the outlier here but I have tried heavier gauge picks in the past but I don't like the tone or feel. I recently bought John Pearse Fast Turtle thin and medium picks to try those out. I just A-B'd those last night against a medium Elderly and again ended up preferring the Elderly pick feel and tone. I need someone else to listen and get their perspective but to my ears the tone seems dull using the heavier picks. |

Wegens are not actually 'under $10', minimum price is $15.
Yes, $15 is for two picks then each is $7.5 -- but anyway, one cannot buy one. If you want one, pay $15, another is a spare. Probably guitar stores sell them by one, I do not know, I wrote about what I see in online shops. |

Clayton Acetal Polymers. (I use acetal small teardrop .50mm, and a 12-pack costs $3.00)
Dunlap Primatone .73mm sculpted plectra, smooth. (you can get a 3-pack for about $6.00 if you shop around.) I consider the primatones to be my outrageously expensive plectras. I save them for when I'm going into energetic jams that will last beyond my normal 9:00 pm bedtime.
