Default Osthoff Guitars 2018

Again, I start a thread with, "its been a while." I just got back in the shop yesterday after a (much) needed break. The shop was fairly clean yesterday, but after a session of brace making yesterday not so much this morning.

I have been busy on some client work, but have also slipped in a couple of spec guitars to send to dealers and or bring out to the Woodstock show.

Anyway in no particular order I will try to post some shots from the shop from the past couple of months. On most of my spec guitars there are large gaps in the timeline of photos, as I really don't take as many as I should.

First up is the Tree OM. This was an idea of Robin from Guitar Gallery and this guitar is destined for there (although we might bring it to Woodstock first.) It has an Italian Spruce top. In this shot I am just getting the material together. (This is fun)

Here the set has been processed a bit:

I wanted to keep a tree theme going on this, so I played around with some recon stone and tried to mimic mahogany leaves on the rosette.

I carried the theme to the headstock and fretboard too ...

... and to the bridge wings

more soon.

Thanks Dan,

Here are a couple more shots of the tree OM. I will try to process some more shots of some other work soon.

I am looking forward to seeing the quilt when the finish gets on the this one.

I love that inlay work, John. Perfect compliment to the wood.

John,

Did you redesign your website? I was just visiting and it is really really good. Very easy and clear to navigate. Lots of info and pictures, but also very valuable info on pricing and ordering etc. Nice!

That's beautiful - I'm a mahogany guy at heart, so that's the top of the heap!

I've had my eye on one of your Koa guitars at Artisan. Wonderful work on that one!

Thanks, normally I try for a little more contrast, but I think this is going to be nice under finish

Ha, that is funny since I have been working (on paper mostly) on a new design on the site, but no it is the same as its been for about 10 years or so. I really spent a lot of time in the early part of the year on it but nothing has been updated. Thanks though Tom, I do like (most of the) site although it needs some work to be more responsive. It needs work.

Yea, I love mahogany too. I have an FS (need to take some photos) on the bench, actually hope to box er up (put the top and back on the rim) tomorrow.

Glad you like the Koa guitar, I liked that one too. Thanks

I "found" another photo from the tree guitar. Here I am dry-fitting the binding, and had put a wash-coat of shellac on the sides. It gives a little insight to what it will look like under finish.

Here are a couple shots from another one going in the shop. It is old growth Cedar with Mango back and sides. I bought the Cedar from a friend who was retiring. The wood came from trees that were left abandoned early last century. The cedar was processed back in the 80's. Nice stuff.

Here is look at the Mango

In this shot a side (along with the back and purfling) are spritzed with water getting ready for bending.

And after the bending.

I have been "playing around" a bit with some rosettes. On the Cedar/Mango FS, I came up with this pinstripe idea:

I decided to carry the pinstripe to the fretboard. I had sketched out a bunch of ideas, that covered the whole fretboard, but eventually settled on just throwing something around the 12th fret. In this shot, the neck is still rough with a lot of clean up to yet to be done.

John, it’ll be a treat to see The Tree guitar at Woodstock. Love the figure on the mango, as well.

I just gotta say...

I got my first Osthoff about 2 weeks ago, a discontinued model the AS-C.
It has become my main go to guitar!

Great player, beautiful tone, outstanding great wood choices (Bearclaw Sitka/ Honduran Rosewood), it has all 'The Stuff!'
As a Worship Director I use it for that purpose primarily, but also in an Acoustic vocal project.
It works so well for everything.

I have a feeling the first Osthoff may not be the last!
Thanks you John for what you do, it's just A BLESSING to have a guitar this outstanding.
