The As clearly have it. When I needed to add a button to my slothead Collings, doing so in a way that would not devalue the guitar by making a personal mod, I researched this question and found that Collings has posted their recommendation, so that's how I did it. It follows the A placement shown on this thread. (True story: I loaned the guitar to David Crosby for an impromptu performance -- he did not have one of his instruments with him -- and when he took the stage he said, "nice guitar' man -- but you have to add a strap button.")

Position A makes the most sense to me. If position B is mandatory for Gibsons.... maybe that explains why I've never owned a Gibson guitar in 55 years of playing.

Well… I did it. Talk about nervous. But I think it turned out pretty good. I opted for position B. I think it looks the best.

Similar here. I formed a leather strip that fits under the strings, a hook for the strap.. Love it there.

Music Villa — the store three miles from the Bozeman factory — asked me if I wanted them to add a strap button before they shipped my new J-45 in 2021. I said yes, of course. It’s in position A, where the strap has a more secure connection to the button because the weight of the guitar pulls the strap directly across the button (not up away from it).

Where every guitar I own has the strap button, whether installed by Michael Gurian or CF Martin.

How can this be a debate?

Oops, too late. Looks like the deal’s gone down.

I think it looks a hundred miles better where you’ve put it - particularly with a wide heel like a Gibson has - and as long as there’s no issue re the strap pulling off (I doubt that there will be) you know you’ve also put the strap and pin further from the palm of your hand if you reach for high notes.
I say you got it right.

IMHO It's A

but it's your guitar, if you're happy that's all that matters

That’s where I would put a button on that kind of wide, rounded heel. But I would have gone for a black button and black felt washer, to blend in better with the finish.

Otherwise, all good!

I also spend some thought and time on strap (and tuning machine) button selection. I like the Waverly strap buttons for the variety of materials and color. I try to have everything blend together well or contrast. My HD-28 has snakewood tuner and neck heel buttons. My E2OM-CD has ebony, as do my resonator and archtop. Other materials on other instruments.

It's a small and easy custom touch but to me adds a lot to tie together the overall look - more of a theme than hodge-podge mix of unrelated hardware.
