Always On Pedal?
Do you have an "Always On" electric guitar pedal? Or nearly always on? Include an amp's reverb.
EHX Soul Food. It's a transparent OD and I leave it on all the time (except when on the clean channel which is rare). I find that if I dial back the amp's gain a little and then put the Soul Food on I get a better tone that using more gain on the amp. How about you? |

I play with a looper a lot, so I like all of the sound shaping effects before that in the signal chain. So I basically don't use the reverb or gain on my amp at all. My reverb pedal (Mr. Black mini) is always on (although I'll change the settings pretty often), I have a Fulltone 2B (tube-ey?) clean boost always on - it just sweetens up the clean sound and then drives the OD pedals harder when I have them on. Those are the only two ALWAYS on, but a couple of others are on the pretty large majority of the time.
I use a really cheap Donner Yellow Fall delay pedal that's paired with my reverb and it's ALMOST always on, set for a very subtle effect that enhances the reverb but isn't all that audible itself. My gain comes from a Visual Sound Double Trouble, which is basically two tube-screamer circuits in one pedal with a couple of small enhancemets. And the first of those two is on a LOT - I can't say always because sometimes I play purely clean, but I have the first OD set for very light edge-of-breakup sound that I'd say I have on 75% of the time, maybe more. And then the second one is set for higher gain and combined with the first can really scream and sustain, but I only kick that one on for the nastiest leads - a little of that goes a long way. -Ray

Not pedal, per say (sic), but always, always have the built-in reverb of my Fender black face amps on. Always.

I quite often run a compressor. It just fattens things up.

On the bigger board, after the tuner I have a JHS Prestige Clean Boost pedal(it has a rabbit coming out of a magician’s top hat as it logo, so I just call it Magic Hat)
It stays on all the time adding a clean buffered push to the signal that is running through about six more pedals before it hits the amp. On a smaller board I use the TS808 Tube Screamer as the clean boost and buffer which i have on all the time. It pushes the signal to another drive pedal then a wah and then dejavibe to the ABC splitter box. Most drive pedals can pull double duty as a clean boost device. Just keep the gain knob off or low, and use the tone and volume knobs for a clean, clear push through the rest of the board.

The only always on pedals for me are a buffer and a compression pedal. But that's only if I'm using pedals. I often plug directly into the Princeton Reverb with no pedals at all.

Amp reverb is always on. The only exception I can remember in 50-plus years of gigging was in a room that echoed like crazy.

Had one, let it go years ago, but regret it now. Great EQ.

EHX LPB2ube, to frame the pedal board, i.e, tube buffered pedal board. Using old clear top RCA 12au7 instead of the 12ax7.

Only thing always on is compressor. And it just barely on. Oh and tuner is always on.

Reverb obviously, though it depends on amp: Deluxe Reverb has its own spring reverb so it’s either on or the HoF is on for different sound; Vox AC4tv has no reverb so then it’s the HoF. When I was contracted for shows at the local church though there was no need for artificial reverb...
Depending on the show or the genre, I’ve started to have the Blues Driver on all the time with just a tiny bit of crunch to simulate eg Beatles’ amps cranked up. I then add Tonebone Trimode for more distortion and overdrive when needed.

Humm I guess I am going to have to look into a compressor.
Suggestions welcome ,,,,,,,,, Currently on my Supro the on board reverb is always on (slightly) On my REVV I usually have the gain Gain knob slightly on and usually also my EH Oceans 11 reverb pedal .
