Not unexpected, frankly, given his age. He has more than earned his retirement; I would hesitate at calling him a genius, but he is surely one of the greatest songwriters of his generation.

Wow. It's sad to see it become so "official". It's one of those things you know will happen but deny it to yourself all the time. Bummer.

A great song writer and performer. But, with respect for an incredible career, it is time to retire. His voice is gone, not strong. Nothing lasts forever.

I appreciate Paul Simon or any other artist who chooses to bow out gracefully as opposed those who keep going, only to become a cover band of their younger selves.
Paul gave us his best, and for that, I'm grateful. |

Difficult to over-estimate the mpact that Paul Simon's music and playing has had on me through the decades...
First heard the "electrified" version on Sounds of Silence, but quickly found the first record, Wednesday Morning, 3 a.m. - and I truly got a good look at what an amazing acoustic guitarist Paul is... seems he is vastly under-rated and frequently forgotten when it comes to folks who appreciate fine acoustic guitar playing... Was just listening to his first solo album and marveling at both his playing and the great tone he got from the instrument... Peace Like a River really showcases a marvelous acoustic guitarist! Of course, there are many, many other songs that show that side of him, as well... And his songs? Pretty much the soundtrack of my life from the 60's through the 90's... Thanks, Paul, for over 5 decades of wonderful music...

Classy retirement letter.
Perhaps, now he will have more time to spend on the AGF?

Quote:
He was 76 in October, and whilst he has announced his retirement - his 29 gig farewell tour begins in May in Vancouver, and ends in July in London after traveling though the US, Scandinavia, Belgium , Netherlands, Eire,Scotland and ending in Hyde Park in London. Not quite as extensive as Leonard Cohen's 2013 world tour, it seems like it would be suitably exhausting for a man of 76. So who's going and where?

First saw him and Art in 1967 in Covina California. The Buckinghams opened for them (really). Amazing ... one guitar, 2 voices and stunning. Watched closely and learned to finger pick soon after. Watching Paul's career was fascinating. Did some stellar solo stuff but I drift back to S & G when in that mood. Incredible body of quality songs and playing. Yeah its been time but what a ride!
