Default Guitar Colour Change - Martin Comment

I posted a thread recently with pictures of how much my Martin JDP II had changed colour.
Yesterday I sent these 2 shots to Martin for comment.

Guitar on left is a stock photo of an early build - mine is on the right.

This is their reply;

Hello Bruce,

The tops of our guitars will age a different rates. The amount of exposure to sunlight, humidity , and temperature all need to be factored. Also the quality of the camera and lighting can play a role.

Did they tell you anymore than you already knew?

(your bridge pins appear to have darkened up quite a bit as well over that time )

No, their comment falls into line with all the responses from the good people here on the AGF.

That's a pretty dramatic change on the rosette! Kinda cool!

I didn't even realize that was the same model guitar in both pics until now.

Ahem, two different pick guard patterns. Rosette is also different.
This is not the same guitar.

What is wrong with the nitro fade on yours? I do not mind it.
Martin has a great, seemingly endless stash of superior sounding sitka.
I wouldn't complain about laquer changes over sitka here.
If it was a Euro, moon, Englemann, (white) top then maybe you could have a minor issue?

How do you like the feel and sound?
I am not enthralled with my aged toner (yellow) 2016 000-18.
But it sounds and feels so great I am fine with the cosmetics.
Wonder what the UV will do to mine in a decade or two?

Also stock sales photography with great cameras and perfect lighting can be hard to replicate by amateur photographers.

A good part of it looks like lighting effects to me. It reminded me of the frustrations I've had trying to get pics of the nice EIR back on my Bourgeois that are similar to what I see.

Part of this could be - they are 2 different guitars. The other part is .... natural aging.

Apparently I didn't make it clear when I wrote 'Guitar on left is a stock photo of an early build - mine is on the right.'

These were a limited build.
I own the last one made.

I did not post pictures of the same guitar.
Same model .. yes.
Same guitar .. no.
The picture on the left is a 'stock' picture of a JDP II I took from the interweb.
Someone else's.
Not mine.

Mine is on the right.... picture taken after I treated the fingerboard and bridge with Music Nomad F-One Oil last week.

Big difference?

Did your guitar look like the top one originally? As others mentioned, it could be the lighting in that photo makes that rosette have so much more contrast then yours. Be curious to see an actual early photo of your guitar. That said, colors do age, lights tend to get darker, and darks tend to get lighter, so your rosettes more blended look seems like it could be totally normal.

A series of pictures of my guitar - the same guitar, starting in 2011 to last week.

Yes there is some colour/lighting variation but it does give you an idea of how much the colour has changed.

Just for the record, I like the way yours has aged better than the newer, un-aged one on the left. Yes, I was paying attention.

I don't follow.

These are two different guitars. So there's no "color change" between the two pictures.

Now this:

is cool, and consistent with what I've seen on a lot of other guitars. My Taylor is 22 years old and has darkened considerably.

Your initial post was quite clear. Wow what a difference . . .

On 'aging toner' don't like it, or the idea. My two Martin Standards are now 10 years old (ish) and I love the darkening of the Sitka - as natural as you can get considering it's covered with nitro cell.

I really like the way the top has aged. I always look forward to the tops darkening naturally on my guitars. Enough people like the look that builders fake it with aging toner. To my eyes, the natural process looks better (although I'm okay with toner if done well). That's a really pretty guitar you have there.
