I actually changed pickup on mine. I went with a soft attack pickup from GFS, it was like $15 or something like that. It sounds different than the flexible wire factory pickup.
https://www.guitarfetish.com/GFS-Pie...ck_p_6436.html I did have to take some material off my saddle to bring the action back down. I'm not sure about changing out the preamp. I'm happy with the controls. They all seem to be effective and I like having the 1/4" or the XLR connection.

Youll probably get as many answers as there are preamps out there..
Im a big fan of grace design. I have their Felix which is a 2 ch preamp. I have actually used it at solo gigs as a mixer. Its ch 1 mic pre is great for vocals.. but its a grand. you do get what you pay for. And recording pres can run 5 figures.. |

I've had good success with my IR and a plywood guitar with a Fishman Sonitone. ToneDexter is a good IR solution and covers all the preamp bases.

venue di pz tonebone boss ve8 ( bit of a learning curve) A search on sweetwater yields quite a few in the 2-300 dollar range. My vote would be the grace design bix. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...c-preamp-pedal |

I find the Fishman Platinum Pro to be a powerful and very useful preamp. I initially got it for guitar and have used it for that purpose at open mics in the past. Now that I'm using a Bose S1 as my PA a guitar preamp isn't necessary. I use the Platinum Pro for mandolin but have also used it as a DI for my bass when plugging directly into the house PA at church. It's right around the top of your price range but I suspect you might find a used one on Reverb or even here on the AGF.

My best friend has the same guitar. Plugged it into a DBR10 along with my ac240 w/JJB and my buddy said "Yucch, why does my guitar sound so bad?"
Ran it through my Behringer ADI21 and there was an immediate improvement. Given this - I would say any decent preamp will make a positive impact on it's tone. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to buy a $300 preamp to make a $300 guitar sound better. YMMV
