Huh, I was expecting to find list of young up and coming guitarists... disappointed.

No offense but tommy Emmanuel and James Taylor aren’t getting people under 40 to pick up a guitar and keep the industry moving forward. I’m a youth minister and the kids in my group who have picked up instruments have done so because of the songwriting and playing of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheran on the pop side of things.

Many I would have thought of have already been mentioned for virtuoso talents. Julian lage, mollie Tuttle, and Chris Eldridge.

I picked it up because of Jack Johnson and the Avett Brothers. I agree that Sheran is #1 for sure right now.

And perhaps not as known for their acoustic playing but are nonetheless extraordinary players, very influential and flying the flag for acoustic rock music, Pete Townshend and Stephen Stills.

In the sense of influence on a whole generation of girls to pick up the guitar, that would be Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift has, apparently, been responsible for selling more acoustic guitars to women than anyone else. I've been told that the recent boom in guitar sales is due to the female buyer. Companies have had to rethink their marketing strategies to appeal to this new emerging market.

Ed Sheeran also get my vote.

The thread says "the most important acoustic players today." Pete Townshend and Stephen Stills are 72 years old. Each.

Antoine Dufour and Andy McKee are the big names in modern fingerstyle. They're about 72 years old. If you add them together Thomas Leeb and Jon Gomm as well. Calum Graham is very young, very good, and very handsome, and he has quite the following.

Tommy Emmanuel and R.I.P Lightnin' Hopkins (from the past) are the most important acoustic guitarist to me.

Because their styles are the ones I aspire to emulate.

I would also say Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. They are the most popular ones I have seen who have a strong presence in popular music culture today.

I think one of the biggest internationally known artists keeping the acoustic guitar alive is Jack Johnson. Everyone knows him and almost everyone can tolerate him. His last album is a smash hit over here in E.U land thanks to him moving back towards his roots style and a lot less comerical pop like his last few albums.

Lets not forget Katie Melua, I just love her voice.

...there are simply too many great players playing too many different styles to assign "most important" status to one guitarist....(not that any acoustic guitar player is important when compared to doctors, nurses, firefighters police officers and such)....

...if we're asking who is most influential in terms of the number of players they affect...i'm too old to give a qualified answer....but my short list of personal favorites would have at least 10 players on it...

True.

The demographic here sometimes seems less aware of others beyond-great individuals such as Pierre Bensusan.

Although's he's not young and hip anymore, Dave Matthews is/was a huge influence for many.

I hate to say it, but Beiber has been known to go troubadour style with a Taylor on occasion (left-handed) and so has one of those guys from One Direction. Something tells me that young guys are going to want to pick up an acoustic and learn some of those Beiber or 1D songs to try to impress some young gals. Some things never change.

And I second what those have said about Taylor Swift. My girls aren't into guitars but for the two hours they were they wanted to learn TS songs.
