Thanks! A compliment from a talented luthier goes a long way!

I purchased a figured Cherry board a little while back and got a chance to find some guitar sets in it. I got four sets plus from it. Here are a couple of the sets. First dry then a half wet with shellac;

This is a very lightweight wood with a nice ring.

I'm a sucker for wood with a story (I case you hadn't already noticed). When I saw this one I jumped and figured I'd find a use for it after I got it. This is a piece of a Thuya burl. They grow underground under Thuya trees exposed to fire. This is from the Atlas mountains in Morocco;

It will work well for future rosettes and possibly some marque work.

Wow, I love the cherry, I am always drawn in to cherry for some reason, it has such a beautiful coloration and grain.

That Thuya wood is unbelievable. Do they subject the trees to fire just to get these burls to grow? I mean, it is unbelievable....Wonder how it would look on a Koa guitar somewhere???????????????????????????????

It seems the way forests have been cleared in Morocco is by burning. Later the burls are grubbed out of the ground.

I am in the habit of using burl for the back of headstocks and the color of Thuya goes great with a mahogany neck on a Koa guitar. Check!

Can I postpone delivery for "a while"?

That maple build is sweet! Is it a spec?

How would you top the OW and what kind of neck do you envision?

Chris

Cherry, the weight and strength is similar to Honduran Mahogany
Hard Maple would be a nice contrast
Regular mahogany is an easy fall back

A deposit locks the price, puts any selected woods aside, and secures a date on my schedule. You can schedule a start as far out as two years. It's usually is four months to complete. Does two years, four months qualify as "a while"?

Yes, the Maple Josie is a spec guitar.

On Olive wood I'd like to do a Yellow Cedar top for one of my larger models; Greta or Josie or maybe even a baritone Bella
For a smaller model; Pina or Penelope an Alpine Italian Spruce would be great.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark, I have seen too many in the past use stain on Cherry furniture. There is an old time method of aging Cherry instantly to a very nice deep dark
cherry look and that is with Lye, the same stuff you would use in soap making.
Simply while it on and it turns deep red. Not sure you would change the natural colour, but worth trying it on some off cuts.

I realize I didn't answer what kind of neck for Olive wood
An Olive wood neck or Bastone Walnut.
White or Black Limba would work.
Any of these are on the right color pallet. It depends on the overall look we're going for. All natural-black Limba. Lot's of abalone- Olive wood etc.
