Looking for a black Strat
Gonna buy a used black Strat with a tortoise pick guard. Keith Urban plays one, so I figure if I had one, I could play as good as he does.
Seriously, trying to keep it around $500. Should I aim for a MIM? Player series? (I guess players are all MIM, anyway, right?) Or should I aim for an American?

Yamaha Pacifica 611HFM in trans black. Hardtail that's already hot rodded. Way better quality parts and build at this price than a MIM.

if you're set on a Fender, the $500 budget will be kind of hard to find an American made one.
Most I've seen are in the $800/$1000 range (Used) with a case. I don't think you would be all that disappointed in one where Mexico is the country or origin, and you're budget puts you in reach for a clean used one. Player Strats new are like mid $800s.

The lowest I'm seeing used Player series Strats (MIM) these days is about $550, and $600-$650 is much more common. If you find one in good shape for $500, buy it because it won't last long at that price.
I haven't seen an American Standard for $500 in forever. I can't remember the last time. With the MIM Player series selling for $850 and the Player Plus series selling for $1,100, it has pushed the price of used Americans up. I'd say the average asking price in my area is around $1,000, and I rarely see them for less than $900. If you see an American Standard for $500, check it over carefully because it's likely to be priced that low because it has some issue(s). |

As far as Fenders go, as mentioned, your price range would be a used Player Series. It's a great guitar. You can also go prior to the Player series as well to previous MIM models. |
