Calling All Hog Guitar Owners!!
What brand of strings do you all use and are the most satisfied with?
I have a Guild Westerly Hog and really like the Monels but haven't experimented with any other brands so far. |

IMO, you've already found them: monels.

Monels and mahogany - a match made in heaven...

If the majority of hog owners weigh in, I have a gut feeling these will be the 'hands down' consensus!

I've found that many different strings (but not all) work quite well with my current Santa Cruz 1929 00 and a previous Santa Cruz 1929 000, for solo fingerstyle (flesh and nail).
The ones I prefer include: Santa Cruz Parabolic mid tension Thomastik-Infeld Spectrum light gauge (with .017 and .013 treble strings) D'Addario Flat Tops light gauge (with .017 and .013 treble strings) Martin Monels (or D'Addario nickel/bronze) light gauge (with .017 and .013 treble strings) |

I just went to Martin's website and they have a lot of different strings. If I were to throw a set of Monels on my Adi/hog Bourgeois, which strings would be the set you'd recommend? It's a short-scale, so I use mediums on it.

I just got this Yairi all Mahogany OM a couple days ago, been loving it. It came with D'Addario EXP16 strings, which are a general purpose string I guess.
Now I have to decide what to use, and so far there seems to be a consensus on Monel. So I just looked up the Monel and see a light with 12-54, and a Tony Rice 13-56 Bluegrass gauge. Is there any difference between these two other than the gauge? Also, I already have some MSP 3100 80/20 bronze light gauge I was planning to try. What is the difference between these and the Monels? |

I just restrung my 2018 D-18 with DR Rare Lights. So far, so good.
Got a set of Santa Cruz Parabolic Lights on deck. |

80/20 uncoated light D’Addario EJ11 by a long shot. Had monels on the new 000-15m but almost an ear bleed effect. When that guitar is broken in it might be more flexible with string choices.

D'Addario EJ16 light gauge phosphor bronze, sometimes the equivalent Flattops.
Seagull dread and S&P folk, all solid, all mahogany. |

For me it's not a "all-Mahogany" or "Sitka-EIR" question. It is a, what strings sound best (to me) on THIS guitar? I don't used the same strings on every Spruce/Rosewood, or every all-Mahogany, or Spruce/Mahogany guitar. With only one all-Mahogany (Breedlove) I'm currently using Elixir's.

I put D’Addario PB custom lights on my M-20 and it sounds fantastic. I will try Monels next. Can’t imagine it can sound better.

Monels for me too. I own a D15m and the monels are perfect for it.
