That is funny. They sing in Gaelic so I never bothered to dig deeper. And I sure couldn't tell Irish Gaelic from Scottish Gaelic. Oh well I guess I am off the island. OTOH my brother swears he traced us to Scottish descent so that may explain why I like em.

I mentioned Snow Patrol a couple of posts back.
Here's a clip of them performing a great acoustic track live.
A Lowden and a Cole Clark.
The song is a beautiful tribute to his Dad.

Sorry, I tried embedding but couldn't get it to work.

Davy Spillane, who walked into a pub in Doolin, came over and joined us playing in the corner for about three hours. Magic!
De Danaan with whom I spent all night in a Paddy Reilly’s Bar in Manhattan the first time I went there
Delores Keane
Mary Coughlan
Mary Black
Frances Black
Eleanor Stanley
Gail Hunnigan
Liam Clancy
Damien Rice
Loads more..
Special mention for Van the Man, I have to as his guitarist and band leader Dave Keary has a son Alan, a superb multi-instrumentalist who’s one of the musicians on my upcoming album. I guess that makes him my personal favourite just now.

Scottish, Irish (Manus Lunny),a great flute player born in Manchester, and a phenomenally good band.

Some years ago I chatted to Tony McManus after he gave a concert, and he said he was about to do some recording with Karen Matheson, the singer of Capercaillie - that would have been some recording!

Yes, it was ridiculous, especially considering there never was a literal unicorn. Greece was called a one horned goat so likely that's where the thought came from.

Also, the song Me Mother She Was Orange And Me Father He Was Green (The Orange and the Green). This was the first one I knew as my wife's parents were exactly that and the Dad was Irish so it was a family joke.

Maybe I missed his name in this thread...or it was subsumed in a named band...but Arty McGlynn...a major inspiration for John Doyle.

Planxty, absolutely, and Christie Moore is also a great songwriter aside from his traditional work with Planxty. McKennitt is what I would describe as 'coffee table book' music-lots of gloss, not much in the way of content. It's just too blatantly 'Oirish'! Likewise the High Kings; too polished, too commercial, too teetotal!

For individual performer, tough to choose between Christy Moore, Christie Hennessey and a new artist I urge you to check out. Daoirí Farrell stole the show on the Celtic Connections tour in 2018 and has just released his latest album. I'm looking forward to seeing him for the third time in a couple of weeks. In 2017, he won a BBC traditional song of the year award with this one:

Here's probably his most played track:

And to finish, one of my favourites:

Really tempts me to take up the Irish bouzouki.
Excellent stuff! Thanks for sharing it all!!

I think McKennit is kind of New Age. I do like her in small doses, however.

The High Kings? Yes, maybe a bit too polished. That said, they are extremely popular. I think they appeal to casual listeners and those that like to hear a lot of classic tunes very arranged. They do have good voices. They come by their music honestly, being related to the families that first brought the music.

The late Liam Clancy wasn't very fond of their approach. He was pretty plain spoken about it. Some of them were related to him.

I think, having visited rural Ireland myself and heard traditional music sung and played in scruffy pubs, the idea of that intimacy being lost in a huge concert hall grates a bit. Like seeing Clapton play the Blues in an Armani suit. Somehow very wrong.

I don't disagree with you. But Ireland is a modern country now. The quaintness of The Quiet Man times can still be found but the Irish don't want to be lost in the past. They have worked to insure success in modern times. Their population is one of the most educated in the world. Ireland has changed.

The people still are very laid back when not working. I will stop now. Lol[emoji16]
