Baranik build - 9/29 UPDATE
Hi all,
Here are some first shots of my new Baranik build. Sinker Redwood and Brazilian RW. It's his new "Super Meridian". It will be my third Baranik; the second that he has built for me. I live 15 minutes away, so I get to visit it often! Very excited! Jenn Last edited by jennconducts; 09-29-2018 at 09:27 PM. |

Baranik
Congrats Jenn! The woods look stellar and I can't wait to see what a Super Meridian looks like. Thanks so much for posting and keep the photos coming.
All the best.

Excellent! Am really looking forward to following along. I've been playing my Meridian for the past week or so and falling in love all over again.

Those woods are fantastic. I love the BRW back, wow.
So interesting how everyone's bracing is just a little different. For example, I wonder why the most distal back brace is at an angle from the rest?

Tom, the truth is that Mike doesn't have a square. He lost it in 2007 and hasn't been able to make anything truly parallel since then.

I have a meridian. All the back braces are off angle. Mine is a fan fret and the top x braces are off angle as well, not sure this is true for non fan fret Meridians.

Very cool to see another Baranik build here--it's been awhile!
Looking forward to following along...

I really enjoyed my builds with Mike even though I was on the wrong side of the world, so it must be fantastic to be so close and actually visit as it is being made. One question though, shouldn't that sound hole be a bit larger? (sorry, I needed to do that before Juston or Deft did!) Col |

Congratulations Jenn,
I'll be watching this one with much interest - I'd heard mention of a new "super-Meridian" some time ago, but this is the first time I'll actually have seen one - and watching it take shape in a build thread is going to be a real treat! Mike is one of the very greatest luthiers on the planet - and this one's looking like it's going to be another stunner. Cheers, David

Thanks for sharing, Jenn. This is going to be a very exciting build thread, for sure! You must feel honored to be the first recipient of Mike's new model. By the way, the wood sets you've chosen are off the charts!
Whereas Colin has expressed concern about the size of the soundhole, my big worry is about Mike's vertical stability, especially in windy conditions, given how tiny his feet have become since the last time I saw him. He might become, out of necessity, the first cable-stayed luthier in history.

Hey Michael! What can I say, I love the man's work, in particular, the sound. That one that he made for Jason is off the charts good, I think. There are so many other luthiers whose work I admire and who I love as friends (Jason, Kathy, Bruce, Joel, et al), but I keep coming back to Mike!
All the best to you! |
