Which Taylor would you sell?
I have two Big Baby Taylors.
I'm making room in my guitar closet and have decided to sell one. One is only a few years old and made in Mexico. The other is almost 20 yrs old and made in USA. (Please folks, don't start any drama about the USA vs. Mexico thing.) I love them both equally, so I'll sell the one y'allz think might pull in a few bucks more. They don't sound the same, but for this thread let's just say they sound equally excellent to my ears. The condition of both is excellent - no cracks or issues. In spite of the age difference, the fret wear of both is similarly minimal. Same excellent action height and playability. Both have their original gig bags, in perfect condition. Knowing nothing else which would you, as the seller, price higher ... or do you feel the value is the same? Last edited by Tico; 04-26-2019 at 05:12 AM. |

In your situation what I would do is list both of them for sale, and keep the one that doesn't sell first. You might get more money for the US-made one, so maybe list that one for $50 more (or thereabouts.)
But honestly, I have no idea which would be considered more desirable, which is why I think I'd let the market decide. whm |

I think the newer one may bring a little more....less play, exposure, etc. Most folks that know Taylor know the USA/Mexico thing means nothing.
Besides, for you, the older one has the age (play-in) and probably has more connection with you as a player. My $.02.

For pure aesthetic reasons I’d keep the newer one - I prefer the black rosette to the laser etched on the older style.

Most folks don't know where most guitars are made.

When I was looking for a used Taylor 512, someone suggested I should try to get one built before 1995. I eventually got a 1995... and discovered that bolted neck only (fretboard not glued to the top) appeared in 1996.
So, I wonder if such a difference verifies on your Taylors.

No drama. IMO, the made in USA is the one to keep.
There may not be a dimes worth of difference between the two. If there is a possibility of appreciation or collectibility, it will be the USA version. |

Probably more than you think, besides they do when the seller points it out.

They say if you have a QB controversy then you don't really have a QB. If you have two guitars and you don't care which one you sell, then list them both. I doubt they'd sell at the same exact time, but if they did, would you feel bad?

Then you are lucky. If that's the case I would have a wife, girlfriend, guy-friend, someone, help me with a blind sound test. If one doesn't play a little bit better then sound is the only consideration to me. I do this when trying to decide between 2 guitars to sell. The one that sounds the best stays. IF you are in a truly (never happens) unique situation and one doesn't please your ears more than the other, then I would set them about 8 feet away and decide which looks better. If after all this, they are truly equal (I doubt it seriously) then you'll have to pick one. It's that simple.
However, I've never A/B'd two guitars for tone and not found one to be more pleasing than the other. That doesn't mean that the other offended me. It just means that when push comes to shove, and you are going to sell one, one of them will sound better to you on the day than the other. |

Made in....
I think more people look at that than you realize.

Bruce, that's understandable since it must be hard to play guitar with 10 thumbs.
If you had only two thumbs and eight fingers would you keep one of the guitars? Seriously folks, thanks for the good suggestions, some of which had not occurred to me. |

Yes, it is hard, but I persevere nonetheless. If I were not all thumbs I suppose I would try to sell both and see which one sold first. I would be tempted to sell the other one too, since I am not a fan. But since you seem to be, I don't think my path is the one for you.
