Default Build Thread: Stehr GA Carpathian/Maddie

Well it's my turn! When I first joined AGF I didn't even bother to look in the Custom section because I thought this was a section for either the ultra well-off or the extreme talented folks. Well, I'm neither of the two, but when I did start reading in this section, there was something about Joel Stehr and his builds that really got me interested. After several emails and Joel's offer of sending my wife flowers to convince her that everything was going to be ok, here I am.

The following is what we decided:

GA Body
Madagascar Rosewood back and sides
Carpathian Spruce top
Ebony bindings
Maple purfling
Sound port
Arm Bevel
Venetian cutaway
Anthem pickup
wooden inlays
wooden rosette
13 frets to body
bound headstock

and along the way, we agreed to do the headplate, fretboard, and bridge plate with hopefully matching Madagascar RW.

(pics to follow as soon as i figure out how)

Default Joel Stehr

Thanks guys for the words of affirmation and encouragement. The journey started out extremely uncertain. Y'know, questions like how the guitar would sound, look, feel - even after all the research and what not. But even the waiting process has been great. Joel has become a friend and a mentor of sorts. Lots of laughter shared. He's been so very patient with me and my questions, especially with me not knowing all the terminology pertaining to the build. If anything, I've learned so much. I'm thankful for the opportunity to have my first build with Joel. Updates will follow as the build progresses!

Congratulations! I recognize that set of MRW as it's one I considered for my build with Joel but went another direction. Joel is a great builder and super nice guy and you will enjoy the journey. Speaking from recent experience (I've only had my Stehr two weeks) you will be amazed by the guitar once you get it. If you haven't decided on your case yet I highly recommend the custom Ameritage he offers. It's a really nice fortress for the guitar when you're not playing it and the look of it is great as well.

I was following your build too! what a masterpiece you have. Any advice on how I can pass the time until mine comes home? Would love to hear your guitar (hint hint!).

And yup, I've chosen the Ameritage case as well.

I feel like I check my email so many more times than I need to these days.

That case is so worth it, but it's heavy!!! I wouldn't suggest anything less, though. Lots of fun to relive the excitement. Joel makes it so much fun, and I am also amazed at the depth and richness of the guitar. Keep having fun!!

Default Very cool

Congratulations! Nothing quite like ordering up a custom guitar and choosing exactly what you want.

I didn't see any size specs, but I did notice the 13 frets. I have a 13 fret custom L-OO from Jim Worland, and I've got a custom 13 fret jumbo coming soon from Tony Klassen of New Era ARK Guitars.

I think 13 is the best of both worlds. You get the better looks and tone of a 12 (because the soundhole and bridge are in the right places), and you get an extra fret of neck space, pretty close to 14. I'm sure the experienced builders here might argue against my logic, but even if I'm not right on the tone, I think I am right on the looks.

You're sure to have a gorgeous guitar. And it'll probably sound pretty great, too. Enjoy your anticipation of something wonderful to come.

Oh, and regarding flowers for your wife... you got off cheap: my wife wants jewels!
