I'm not going to differentiate between lite versions, intermediate versions, and full versions of any DAW. The purpose of the list was mainly to be a resource for anyone choosing a DAW so they can get a sense of how much help might be found here. For the same reason I made no distinction between ProTools and ProTools HD. They're technically two different DAWs but for 99% of the things anyone here might want to do, the steps involved would be identical.

I use both Reason and Reaper coequally and I'm intermediate on both.

Reason is just fun but not as guitar friendly while Reaper is cheaper and it is guitar friendly.

Jim,

Like others, thanks for keeping a tally and providing pricing information.

Your ProTools listing is incorrect. ProTools Standard costs $600 for a perpetual license and includes one year of updates. Updates are $200 per year after that. The subscription price is $30 per month. Keeping with your desire to not make this too complicated, perhaps you could edit your data as follows:

___ AVID Pro-Tools Standard ($600 + $200 per year beginning year 2 or $35 month)

Just a thought.

Updated. Thanks.

If anyone else notices a pricing error, let me know.

Garage band here. I also have/use a Tuscan 2488 Neo that I use. Trying to figure out which one I like better. I haven't had ton of time or did a ton of recording on either. Back in the 90s I had a Tascam 388 reel to reel that I did quite a bit of work on, but I'm not all the way up on the new tech. I guess I'm intermediate overall.

This is a good thread for me as I've thought about moving more into the DAW world with something better than what I'm currently using. Thanks for posting this.

From Garage Band (which technically is a DAW program -albeit limited comparatively to a full featured DAW) Logic Pro is arguably a logical (punny) choice.

However
If you are using some kind of USB mic into the computer for GB along with moving to something like Logic consider you will most likely also want a digital interface as well.

I am currently using Steinberg Cubase 10 Pro on a reasonably powerful PC. I started out with Cubase Studio probably 10 years ago and before that I used a dedicated Roland digital multi-track system. I updated to version 10 Pro about 9 months ago when their system was being sold at 50% discount, and I'm glad I did. I use a Presonus interface, have three very good stereo mic preamps, and a pretty good collection of serviceable studio mics.

I am probably an advanced intermediate user. I have done a lot with this system, particularly since the pandemic when I have been doing so many video and audio services for others. I am probably using this system at least 20 hours per week right now, sometimes 40 hrs/wk.

I have a fair number of plug-ins, but many were gifts from my oldest son, who knows what I need before I do. I started using Cubase because that's what he uses, and he makes money at this business. I figured he could help me out if I got stuck, and he has.

I'm a simpleton so I use Garageband. Works well for recording a few tracks and works great with my Line 6 pod hd500x. I definitely have not used all of the features. I am getting a midi keyboard to take advantage of the synths and drums and things like that.
