Stupid question about mic preamps from someone who knows nothing
I used to have a separate amp, preamp and tuner to listen to music until my 1970's Marantz tuner gave up the ghost. In my normal scannings of Craigslist for guitars, I saw a Harmon Kardon 1982 amp for cheap and bought it. Now I need a preamp. The only one for sale used locally is a great deal on a mic preamp (a dbx 386 for $100, which I haven't tried asking for less yet).
I eventually will be recording my wife singing over my guitar, so this is an interesting prospect. But can I use it for running a cd player through to my amp?

It won't have inputs compatible with consumer electronics. XLR and 1/4" instead of RCA. There won't be any internal switching to run the CD and a tuner or phono. Mic and audio preamps are two different creatures entirely.

What else besides a mic, a preamp, a direct line input to my iPad do I need to star recording my own stuff (only the basics)?
