I started with polys and thought I loved them. Thought they were great because they didn’t squeak. Realized after trying nanos that the slippery nature of polys was interfering with my chording and really did dampen the sound. Then I loved nanos. explored non-coated strings and convinced myself I didn’t love nanos anymore. Went back to nanos after a good while and now that’s all I use. So I like them very much. This was about a 10 year process

Original post of this zombie thread was written in 2009. It’s possible that OP’s set ox elixir may need changing by now...

You could put any string in that question and somebody would hate them. Strings are very much a your mileage may vary item.

I don't use them, but I don't hate them, I just like other strings more.

I kill regular strings. I love Elixirs because I'm playing MORE and restringing LESS.

Anyone Else Hate Elixir Strings???

Not even close. I've been playing over 55 years and tried a lot of strings, but Elixir is my current brand of choice. All my guitars are now strung with Elixirs, and have been so for a bout 15 years except when I wanted to try out another brand. Some of those went right back to Elixirs. All went back to Elixirs with tne next string change, usually an early change.

Simply put, it's my brand of choice, and I'm surprised the moderators let you use "hate" in the topic box.

De gustibus non disputandum.

Don

I like Elixirs because they sound great and do for a long time (regardless of what some may think), and they save me money in the long run. They're lively, offer complex overtones + great sustain, and they feel great.

Don't like Martin 80/20. They sound zingy for a week and then die. Ugh.

Don't like EJ-16s on any of my guitars either (why do I keep trying them?). Just put a set on my Martin 000-15sm and can't wait to get them off. Back to Monels.

Correct, especially if that Taylor guitar with Elixir strings was purchased at Guitar Center.

I wouldn't say hate, but meh. I prefer the sound and feel of non-coated strings, and I'd rather change the strings more often than put up with ones that don't sound as good to my ears.

This is quite a thread considering the OP last posted on AGF in 2011!

Love them on my Taylors. For me they just go together.

Dislike them on my Martin's.

To quote one of our brethren on the Martin Forum a while back, "Friends don't let friends play coated strings"...

I love zombie threads, why not?

On agf it seems Elixirs are hated or loved. I used them on my acoustics for about a decade straight with the exception of the odd experiment with a non coated. In the last 3 years I've been on an path of trying different strings, both coated and non coated. Realized I like a lot of strings. I'm not done my journey of getting others yet but I am going to try my old go to Elixir Nano PB custom lights in the next few months on my Guild.

Anyway, I love Elixir Nano, they play and sound great to my ears and saved me a lot of money.

Hate is a strong word. I would say that I really tried to love them because they are so popular and gave them a few chances. They are just too slick for me, yes even the popular Nanowebs. I have to admit on some guitars they sound pretty good, especially darker toned guitars.

I do like their HD sets because of the gauges though and wish other manufacturers would offer similar packages. But nope, guess Elixir is the only manufacturer who will make a set with a beefed G, B and e
